Ockum's Razor __________________________________________________________
cuts deep by Nathan Kamp Ockum's Razor is a hard-rock band that knows no boundaries. While other bands might have given up when they find themselves without a rhythm section, with members coming and going and tensions running high; Ockum's Razor decided to change their musical direction and make the most of what was left of the band. In early 2007, Christopher Davis (vocals and keys) and Mike Viner (guitar and backround vocals) went acoustic. "The two of us just started trying out material on an acoustic level and it turned into something great," says Christopher. This was the beginning of The Terrible Truth, the name of their acoustic record that will be out later this year. "We have been working very hard. We've also gone through alot of band members over the last few years trying to get the right fit for the band." The stage seems to be set for a major breakthrough as Ockum's Razor, rounded out with Adam McClain on percussion and Ryan Hawkins on bass, is extrememly close to organizing and releasing material for a full-length record. "We have a lot of material and now that we have a rhythm section again, we have even more opportunity to create something new," says Christopher. The band has been together since August of 2002 with a number of members coming and going over the years, while Christopher and Mike remain the two original members of Ockum's Razor. "It's kind of a funny story of how Mike and I met," explains Christopher. "I first met Mike while working with him at McDonald's back in 1992. We got along with each other very well. Then, years later I responded to a wanted ad for a singer and when I showed up at the audition, there was Mike from McDonald's. I hadn't seen him in years," he says. After reuniting, Christopher started to explore his writing capabilities more deeply with Ockum's Razor and continues to write the lyrics while Mike writes most of the music. "When we write music everybody brings something to the table," explains Christopher. "We try to keep an open form and not overly complicate things. We sometimes get very serious about making music, but then there comes a point where we stop and simplify things," he states. This is the type of attitude that you would expect from a band that calls themselves Ockum's Razor. Occam's Razor is a theory introduced in the 14th century that changed the way people viewed philosophy and the decision making process. It presents a more logical simplistic approach to life. "We had to change our name in 2004-05," explains Christopher. " 'Few and Far Between' was the name of our band, until we found out there was already another band by that name. We chose 'Ockum's Razor' and changed the spelling because we liked its significance. The theory talks about choosing the most simplest form when making a decision. It seemed to be a more realistic approach to life and that's why we thought it would be a great name for our band." Regardless of what name they use, this band is turning heads everywhere with their explosive live shows and is gearing up for a busy 2008. Ockum's Razor plays about two full-band shows a month and one acoustic show a month. If you have been to a local rock show lately, then there is a possibility that you may have seen Ockum's Razor as they have opened up for numerous acts in the past. "Our main goal is to reestablish ourselves and become known in the local scene," explains Christopher. Both he and Mike seemed to be relieved just to have a full band again. "I feel that we finally have a good palate to build upon. Mike and I have been working very hard with our acoustic record and now we can finally go back to making a full-band electric record as well," he says. Ockum's Razor does have a two-song sampler cd and a four song EP of which they recorded themselves, but they seem hell-bent on releasing their full-length albums by the end of 2008. "Right now we are working with a guy named Eugene, who is making a compilation CD to benefit the Fallen Firefighter Project of 2008," says Christopher. "We are performing two songs for the CD, with the lyrics written by Eugene and the music written by us," he says. This project is to recognize the sacrifice and dedication that firefighters give us everyday as well as benefit the families of those who have fallen. Eugene has many different St. Louis artists as well," explains Christopher. "The two songs that we are doing are acoustic but the compilation will have many different musical styles when it is finished." Whether you are looking for a hard-rocking night of music or a slower acoustic tempo, Ockum's Razor has it all and is only starting to tap into their diverse musical capabilities. *Circa March 2008, Issue 22. _____________________________________________________________ Band bio: Ockum's Razor By Debbie Settle Of the Edge Genre: Heavy Metal/Hard Rock/Experimental/New Wave Members: Topher-Vocals and Keyboard; Viner- Guitar and Vocals; Ryan- Bass; VooDoo-Drums.
