"It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings. And she isn't even on stage yet!"
--Sarah

Due to circumstances we still hope to resolve, The Doghouse is closed until further notice.

We appreciate all the support we have received today from patrons and local bands and, rest assured,. we haven't given up and hope to re-open as soon as possible.

We'll let you know the status of pre-arranged events as soon as we can.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make The Doghouse the success we believe it is and, if we can help it, this is not the end.

The Doghouse.

Update:

There's more in today's Courier at http://www.thecourier.co.uk/output/2009/03/11/newsstory12756854t0.asp

And you can if you wish follow-up on our forum at http://doghousepub.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=69

Thanks again for all the bands offering support.

Thursday Update:

View’s anger over Doghouse closure

Dundee band The View reacted furiously to the news their favourite venue The Doghouse has been closed after the licensee was sequestrated at the
request of Dundee City Council.

Pete Reilly, guitarist with the band, said last night they were “gutted” by
its closure and the decision-makers at the council should “hang their
head in shame.”

“We all think it’s ridiculous; it wasn’t a massive amount of money and
Sarah (Hill, licensee) does a brilliant job of keeping that place going.

“It’s a fantastic place for bands to play and it’s where we really started
out. Sarah gave us the use of the upstairs room and we practically
lived there for months.

“The Doghouse was brilliant for us, there’s nowhere else like it and all the
young bands get treated really well by Sarah and the staff.

“We all still hang out there, it’s the first place we go when we get back
from touring and it shouldn’t be shut for that amount of money.

“Where will all the young bands hang out now? They’ve got nowhere.”

Just a couple of things to add. The amounts outstanding are, and always were, able to be handled (in fact the total installment overdue was much less than the total figure you see quoted) - especially with all the support from local bands for which we are thankful and greatly appreciate. However Dundee Council and Administrators Begbies Traynor incorrectly (and with no discussion) decided this was not the case and any way forwards is in others hands right now.

Also despite what some think, very little money was stolen in the break-in at the weekend as the substantial night's takings were already off-premises, subsequently banked and are now in the hands of the Administrators - so we hope that squashes any conspiracy theories before they start. The first Doghouse staff or management knew of the closure was when the Administrators arrived Tuesday lunchtime and shut us down.

That Doghouse was/is a viable "going concern" but the current financial climate seems to be "shoot first, ask questions later." We are extremely disappointed and upset that it was Dundee City Council, of all people, who shut us down. So much for supporting small businesses in bad times.

That was my first thought when I heard. Surely this flies in the face of current government policy to support businesses through the credit crunch.
Have you considered contacting one (or more) of Dundee's MPs/MSPs?

That's sad news for Dundee! couldn't all the bands get together and play some gigs to raise money? maybe at a different venue at the mo! or a mini festival.
I'm sure tons of bands wouldn't mind helping out! that sucks!

We wish you all the very best during this very uncertain time, and hope that The Doghouse is allowed to reopen, and thus prosper.
We have enjoyed every single minute of every time we've played The Doghouse, and (selfishly) would like that to continue ad infinitum - the Staff and Patrons are first class!!!!

Here's to the people in control (?) seeing sense!!

Due to work commitments, I only found out on Wednesday about ..The Doghouse.. being closed down by the council and am in total shock for it was only through recently meeting Sarah, I found not only the initiative to challenge my own beliefs and begin to put into practice what I have been working on for five years but an instant friend of whom was prepared to help me help others, like she has done all her life for she gave me the courage and the privilege to set a charity I was about to unveil in Dundee, through the use of an office in the Doghouse and I promise as life is my witness, if justice for Sarah is not to be found, I will for one take my status some place else and while I might appear to be burning my own bridges in my own town, certain people in dundee should be HUNG in shame for their own gain.

DEAD EARNEST

There was, is and always will be only one Doghouse. It has been my consistent "home" for 5 years and through that I have seen Sarah become the hardest working person on the entire music scene in Dundee - she has performed miracles and to put her through this is a travesty on what is actually a major success story in Dundee - or has the council forgotten about the award already!! She has built the careers of many bands, way more than anything I could ever do, and deserves an award of her own. You get the feeling that this was about something more than just money as far as the council is concerned, but who can say!! Either way, the groundswell of support for the venue is growing by the day and all I can do is lend my voice to those who offer help and support.
The Doghouse will be back - it is simply too good to lose!!

That is more than rubbish. I lived in Dundee about 4 years ago and although it wasn't a venue I visited much The Doghouse was always a venue I admired. Remember when Frank Black played there many years ago, I didn't go. I couldn't get tickets. But still... I pray that you open again. If there's anything I can do give me let me know.
