Unfortunately yes we have been defeated by someone with bottomless pockets it seems.

Punch Taverns have sold the building out from under us to an anonymous purchaser and we have been given a termination notice. Rumours and conspiracy theories abound but the new owners seem to wish to remain hidden until after we are closed.

There will be an official "from the heart" statement from Sarah shortly.

Renowned Dundee music venue to close

THE MUSIC scene in Dundee was dealt a huge blow yesterday when it was officially confirmed The Doghouse is to close on August 10.

The Brown Street venue—responsible for launching the careers of bands such as The View and The Law in recent years— has been sold by the building’s owners Punch Taverns.

Proprietor Sarah Hill told The Courier she had officially been given notice to leave and that the last gig under the current management would take place on August 7.

“I am obviously upset after having worked away for five years,” she said.

“But if somebody buys the building out from under you there isn’t very much you can do.”

The news will come as a particularly bitter blow for music fans and musicians alike, who fought to save the venue when it closed down for two months earlier this year over outstanding debts.

More than a dozen local bands—including The View—played two fund-raising concerts to get the premises reopened.

Ms Hill said she hoped that the team running The Doghouse could become involved in a new Dundee music venue soon.

“I am looking at possibilities, but it is still early days,” she said.

Ms Hill added that she had been offered first refusal on The Doghouse, but that the asking price —thought to be in region of £400,000—was not within her means.

It is not known who the new owners of the Brown Street premises are, although there has been previous speculation it could be two Edinburgh businessmen.

Ms Hill said it had only been indicated to her that it would reopen as a pub.

Punch Taverns was unavailable for comment last night.
