"Stephen Wright's original photograph, used for the inside gatefold of The Queen is Dead, clinches the prize for the most famous image of The Smiths". Will Woodward - the Guardian Armed with his first Nikon Stephen Wright was given the chance to capture The Smiths at their peak. These iconic images have now become part and parcel of their visual history. Shot by an ardent fan they have been printed widely on album sleeves and in the media and books and retain an honest charm over 20 years later. The classic photo of The Smiths at the Salford Lads club is part of the National Portrait Gallery collection and helped give the Salford Lads club itself an unusual historical aspect. Think of the Smiths and you generally have this image in your mind…… We are very excited to announce that a mini exhibition featuring 14 of Stephen's prints is now on show, here at Piccadilly Records and limited edition signed prints are available in a variety of sizes and editions from www.smithsphotos.com.
Watch this space for more information.

We're also running a competition to coincide with the mini exhibition. As a prize, Stephen Wright has very kindly given us a signed limited edition print of the classic image of The Smiths outside the Salford Lads Club, as used on the vinyl gatefold of the "Queen Is Dead". The print is a 9.5" x 14" image on 12" x 16" photographic paper -edition of 100 worldwide - supplied unframed. Stephens prints range in price and edition from £45-£300 and you can have a look at them at www.smithsphotos.com To enter the competition all you have to do is answer these five easy questions:
1. Name 3 area's of Manchester used by The Smiths in either lyrics or song/record titles.
2. There were two different versions of the sleeve for the "What Difference Does It Make?" 7". Who were the two cover stars?
3. Apart from a rather large amount of foliage, what other 'accessory' did Morrissey wear when The Smiths performed "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" on TOTPs?
4. "Reel Around The Fountain" paraphrases lines from which classic film of the 60s?
5. Salford Lads Club is on the corner of a street with a famous name - what is the name of the street?
email your answers by clicking on this link. Competition closes at midnight on Christmas Eve 2008. In the event of several people getting all five answers correct, a draw will take place. The winner will be contacted by email. If you would like to help secure the long term future of The Salford Lads Club you can make a donation by visiting the Salford Lads Club website.
