Below: Those were the days

To those of you who are following the Mallory & McCall (and thus the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band) soap opera, here's the latest. In late June (we're in '09 now) Mallory had the pain pump installed. All was good, except his feet became more and more numb, a condition that had begun a month or so before, but even his doctors didn't take much notice. It crept up his legs and in a space of four days suddenly he couldn't support himself on his legs or walk and had to be taken to the hospital.
Mallory has had two failed surgeries on his back. In both cases metal was implanted to support and fuse the spine. Another surgery was planned for about December--time to allow his weak bones to strengthen with treatment. The surgeon decided that as he lost the use of his legs due to a pinched nerve on his spine he would go in and do the whole thing.
On July 4 they operated, giving him metal all the way up to just below his neck. His spine is now straight and back to normal. Unfortunately, his legs are another story. He can barely walk with a walker and it will take a long time to bring them back to normal, which may or may not totally happen. He is determined to work to get as much back as possible. There have been a few setbacks but we are encouraged.
Thanks to the wonderful pirates who held those great benefits we were able to buy a cheap but good 16 or so year old SUV. Unfortunately, Mallory won't be able to drive it for a while with his bad legs as it has a 5 speed transmission! I can't take the helm as I have rather nasty double vision. I see two ships in the water and tend to fire into the middle!
So we are on the lookout for a really cheap (a few hundred doubloons) automatic car that he will be able to drive to the doctor and the market. Needless to say, it's got to run, have brakes that work and all that, but it can be the winner of the world's uglist car contest and that's fine. If anyone has such a critter that they would sell cheap, please get in touch!
Meanwhile, the Captain sleeps a lot and is in a lot of pain so he's not really up to visitors, but we'd love to hear from you. Email us at Mallory@MalloryandMcCall.com
As for me (Mac the Wife), I do chores and try and pack up for the upcoming move (another story). I can't recall when I have worked so hard. My ship is low in the water, and not from a cargo of gold. Still, we are hanging in, staying clear of the fabled plank. At least no one can make Mallory walk it with his walker!
Thanks to all those who have helped. Words cannot express how much it means to us. I think we'd be locked in a looney bin if not for our friends.
Cheers and good thoughts,
Jan Mac the Wife
