I like making videos. It gives us musicians a chance to step outside of our familiar world for a day or two and expand our creativity.
That being said, I was barely a factor in the creative process of the 'Shine' video. Sure, the director Kip, my manager and I had conversations about the spirit of the song, the emotions we wanted evoked and what I did NOT want, but all credit for anything beautiful goes to Kip and his team.
I showed up to pretend to sing and play 'Shine' about a hundred times in front of a green screen, in jeans and a t-shirt. It's not that I refused to dress up for the occasion, but this is a mellow song about my stepdaughter and I didn't want anything to come across flashy or fake. I did my job and I think I did it well, but all the magic happened in the next two months.
The result is pure animated eye candy, you'll have to see it for yourself. And as discussed in the early days, all necessary emotions are evoked.
