<3  forever in our hearts  <3

This blog was originally posted on September 12, 2007.

My brother (Alan) and sister-in-law (Liz) have lived together since 1970 or '71, so I have pretty much always called Liz my "sister-in-law."

In reality, Liz and Alan only got married a few days ago. A photo of Liz on their wedding day is below. She jokingly says it was a "shotgun wedding," because as you can see, she looks like she's about seven months pregnant. Unfortunately, she's not.

Liz was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer a few days earlier. Monday, her doctor drew three liters of fluid from her abdomen, providing some relief from the bloating, pressure and pain. Today (Wednesday) Liz is undergoing surgery to remove the cancer. We hope.

Liz is like the sister I never had. She filled in as my dad's health care provider in 2004 when I was in the hospital with NF. In fact, she helped care for me during my illness, as well. She gave both Dad's and my doctors Hell (which they NEEDED) and, no doubt, she played a huge role in my survival. She and I cared for Dad until his death in 2005 and then Liz flew to Hawaii to care for her dying aunt. Soon after that, Liz's mom died, as well.

Liz is a woman with a heart of gold and I am devastated by the news of her cancer. Aside from all the loss of the past three and a half years (my arm, my dad, Liz's mom, Nora's mom, etc. etc.), my brother and I lost our mom to uterine cancer in 1970, so the feelings of déjà vu are quite undeniable. This was finally the last bad news I could handle, the numbness I have felt for so long now has finally given way to a flood of tears ...

I LOVE YOU, LIZ, PLEASE GET WELL. EVERYONE READING THIS, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PRAY FOR MY SISTER-IN-LAW. SHE'S ONLY 61 YEARS OLD AND, LIKE I SAID BEFORE, HAS A HEART OF GOLD ... THE WORLD NEEDS HER HER A LOT LONGER THAN THIS.

Please read the comments below for updates! The newest updates are always at the bottom ...

My thoughts go out to you, Eenie as well as Liz and Alan. I pray for a miracle, she's such a wonderful person and if there's one due, it's for her. She was an angel with Herman and again with you. God bless her and keep her well. Love, Hope

HI,

It's 4:00 - I just tried calling but the line was busy. The Doctor just called and said the surgery went well. I am on the way to the hospital - He said she probably will be on a respirator for a couple of days so don't expect her to call right away. I'll let you know as things develop. I haven't had time to send the DVDs yet -- tomorrow.

Love,
Alan

Hi,

The Doctor said the operation was "extensive" what ever that means, and he said he got out all the cancer (but they always say that). She is still on a respirator -- so she can't talk and looks miserable -- but better than yesterday. I cornered the doctor in the hall and he said that she was doing well -- and was leaving her on the respirator as a precaution. She should be able to talk by tomorrow or the next - I'll let you know. I'm going to run off now for the evening visiting hours. She is in the super intensive ICU and visits are a little restricted but she should be moving to the normal ICU soon and then to the ......

Love,
Alan

PS. Still haven't gotten to the post office -- tomorrow.

Subject: Liz is Out of ICU
Date: 9/17/2007 2:40:57 AM Pacific Daylight Time

Hi,

Well, they moved Liz out of the ICU. She has a chest tube and a nose tube (that goes to her stomach) so she doesn't feel like talking yet. Soon. In any case she is in John Muir Medical: 925-947-5233, room 588. She'll probably be in there for another 5 days or so. She looks better but the most they'll let her eat is a half an ice cube. That's driving her nuts. You should wait until either she calls or I'll let you know when she's accepting calls. I passed on all your emails, except yesterdays which I forgot to get -- but she'll get it tomorrow.

I know that if it weren't for Liz, I would have been an even bigger wreck than I was while you were in the hospital, and I probably would have gotten thrown out or arrested for freaking out on some doc/nurse due to sheer frustration (which I was constantly on the edge of anyway); she took the worry about taking care of Herman off us both so I could concentrate on you, and added another respectable family member to the mix so the docs saw further proof that you weren't a lowlife junkie they would just let die.

Liz, my prayers are with you and I hope your doctors are better than the shmucks at Oliveview. Here's a couple of cute forest friends to wish you well!

Date: 9/22/2007 2:33:12 AM Pacific Daylight Time

Hi,

Well, Liz is getting better -- she has had the tubes (the nose and chest) taken out, and she soiled the sheets -- which made everyone happy because that means her digestive system is beginning to work again. Tomorrow she starts on real food. There is still a long way to go -- they want her to start chemo right away -- I hope this isn't a bad sign. She is well enough to take phone calls -- her number is 925-947-5233 room 588 (they will answer "5 west" which is the wing of the hospital she's in). I haven't been able to see her for the last two days -- I've been on crutches for the last month -- and two days ago taking up the garbage I did something wrong and [injured my leg again]. Today was much better -- so I should make it there tomorrow.

Love,
Alan

Hi,

They have moved Liz to a new room for the Chemotherapy and she is supposed to be released today! So, calling her might be a problem. But I'll let you know when she gets home -- or not. It's up to the chemo guy (who is a big supporter of medicinal marijuana -- he's going to get Liz signed up with the local buyers group). She will tell you all about it.

I talked to Liz tonight. She's doing really well! She went out to lunch (yesterday?) with her friend (Betsy?), who also helped her shower and dress. After lunch, Liz went to get a vitamin C infusion. She said it worked wonders, and got rid of her back pain. She had been suffering the back pain since her first chemo session. She's still not up for phone calls, she said in a few days (she'll let me know and I'll let everyone else know).

She wanted me to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers, etc. It really made her happy to hear that so many people are thinking of her. She's a funny lady ... she actually told me SHE ENJOYED HER HOSPITAL STAY! She said that John Muir Hospital is a great facility with a caring and knowledgeable staff. She enjoyed talking about medicine and medical/social/political issues with all the doctors and nurses.

I feel better, too. I really think she has the strength and will to beat the cancer. Karma seems to be working in her favor at this point. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers, however, just to play it safe! Thanks!

Doreen

Hi,

Well, Liz has some new complication. We spent the whole day getting tests. The abdominal X-ray was finally done at about 4:30, but the doctors at the cancer center had gone home. The radiologist thought there might be bowel blockage, but wasn't sure. He never talked to the doctor! A nurse at the center told Liz to go the ER and get admitted -- yeah, great. So, we called Danielle who, bless her heart, called the X-ray people and told them to wait for me to come and pick up the X-ray. The ER doctor said it was inconclusive, so off to the Cat Scan, where it was decided that it wasn't blockage but some other bullshit, long story short, she can't eat or drink for 24 hours, but needed a three hour IV hydration, and then can only take clear liquids for 2 days. You'll get the details when she comes out of this. She's VERY Grouchy. One day to go.

Hope you are feeling better! We will be sending you CANDIDOL - you can check it out at www.micronutra.com. Say hi to Nora.

Love,
Alan

Hi,

Liz underwent "exploratory" surgery today to find out what was causing her digestive problems. The good news is that the Doctor said it wasn't cancer that was causing her bloating -- but rather a lymph cyst (or something like that). She is still coming off of the anesthetics, so I still haven't talked to her. It will probably be another day before she'll be taking phone calls -- I'll let you know. She still hasn't had anything to eat for over a week now -- liquid diet yesterday. She's skin and bones -- we'll have to fatten her up. Say hi to Nora.

Love,

Liz called me Saturday night (10/27/2007) to say hi and thank me for a necklace I bought, had engraved and mailed to her. She was still in the hospital at that time. She was in good spirits, but very, very tired (still recovering from the exploratory surgery). They had just removed her feeding tube and she was enjoying some liquids, but she was still not allowed solid food. I'll let you know more as soon as I can, whenever that is. By the way, if you want to send her anything, send it to their house and if she's home, great! If not, Alan will bring it to her. That's what I did (I think it's safer that way). If you need their address, email me.

Sent Liz a GET WELL card and a pretty blue hat (her hair has fallen out from the chemo) last week. Liz called Saturday night (11/10) to let me know she got them and to thank us. Nora picked the card -- we all thought it was hysterical -- who knows, it just might be true! LOL. Anyway, Liz is doing better. She spent a couple more weeks in the hospital, they performed some surgery for her tummy trouble and also looked for more cancer since they were in there already. They found no new growths and she goes back to chemotherapy soon -- Monday the 19th, I think. I also think all of our prayers and her strong will is helping her beat this awful cancer. Thanks, everyone. :) I'll continue to keep you posted. -Doreen

Liz is still recovering from her second surgery. She lost so much weight that they postponed her second round of chemotherapy. But, having gained three pounds in the last week (I've learned to bake apple pies), she just had Chemo 2 today (Wednesday, 12/5) -- which means that any minute now the feel good drugs they mix in are going to wear off -- and ...

She call or write -- as soon as she feels better.

Date: 1/28/2008 10:44:47 PM

Hi. Well, it's got so bad that it hurts even when I'm sitting. So today I had a preliminary appointment for hip replacment. The x-ray showed the two bones just grinding away. Tomorrow they'll call me to set a date. Liz is getting ready for her fourth round of chemotherapy. She's putting on weight and is looking better, but you never know. Maybe the next time you see me I'll be off crutches, of course, the last time you saw me I was off crutches. So, imagine me on crutches ... O.K. Now the next time you see me ...

Dear Doreen,

Sorry to have been out of touch for so long. I have been feeling tired a lot from the chemo, but worse, the diarrhea I have suffered since my original operation has only worsened with the chemo, and, in spite of medication, the frequency of john-sitting has been so gravity-dependent that I have had to lie semi-prone a good deal of the time on the couch. At least my back has gotten a lot stronger, although I have developed a curve in my spine below my shoulder blades from all the hospitalization and lack of nutrient ingestion, I presume.

Thanks for the articles you've sent. I have noticed a lot more worry around about drug-resistant bacteria lately, and many viruses never had any drugs that would touch them in the first place, of course. I have told you that I managed many times to fend off the flu virus with bowel-tolerance doses of vitamin C. I still have confidence that many of the herbal anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral substances also remain effective. I am convinced that oregano oil tincture cured me of my nasty crotch abscess a couple years ago. Grapefruit seed extract is helpful for many conditions, as are goldenseal and echinacea. But IV vitamin C is still the medicine of last resort for the very nasty illnesses, such as bacterial and viral meningitis, tuberculosis, etc. It just is still not recognized by the medical community.

Speaking of recognition by the medical community, my lobbying of my medical oncology group re: IV vitamin C has them seriously considering adding this option to their infusion clinic!

I continue to get IV vitamin C twice a week, and will do so for a year, even after the end of my chemo treatments. I have been lucky so far to have had very little nausea from them. I just had my 4th treatment of 6 systemic ones. Since I did begin to experience a little tingling and sensitivity in my fingertips, my medical oncologist switched me from paclitaxol to a sister drug, docetaxol (taxotere), which is less likely to induce peripheral neuropathy. I am taking lots of antioxidant supplements and immune-system boosters on the advice of a nutrition-oriented doctor up here. I have gained back about 10 pounds since my last bout in the hospital. For the first time in my adult life I am wearing size 6 jeans--so wierd. My skin is still hanging off me in folds.

I am wondering if the candidol has been helpful at all. I am taking it because I know the chemo kills off all the friendly bacteria in my gut. It took a while, but I now take it faithfully three times a day. It does not matter if you take it with juice or before bed (rather than before a meal), and it does not matter if you take it longer than 30 minutes before a meal. It just needs to be taken on an empty stomach, i.e. two hours after a meal and at least 30 min. before one.

Alan can at last see some light at the end of the pain tunnel, now that he has a date for his hip operation. He apparently has a congenital condition which aggravated the problem, in that one leg is shorter than the other. His weight is the main aggravating condition of course. He is still fighting to lose weight while on prednisone, so as to not be over the weight allowed for the operation and to optimize his chances of a good outcome. Poor guy, he learned how to bake apple pies and macaroni and cheese to help me gain weight, but it was too tempting for the prednisone-induced nibbles, so he ended up putting on a lot more weight than I have been able to.

Have you seen a movie with Janeane Garofalo called "The Truth About Cats and Dogs?" It's really cute, even though it is more about dogs than cats. She plays a vet who has a call-in advice radio show.

How are you guys doing? Spring has sprung up here, but it is raining a lot and we still have a major problem to deal with regarding the septic tank. We are not hooked up to the sewer system, because it would cost a fortune to pump it up hill to the street. We live off-street below our neighbors. Hope things are going better for you.

Thanks for your note, Doreen. I, too, have been out of touch since I had my last three (of six) chemos back to back, that is, every three weeks. They took me off Taxol after the first three, because I was beginning to feel signs of peripheral neuropathy with tingling in my fingertips, and that can get worse and even become permanent with continued doses. The substitute was taxetere, which has its own side effects, particularly depressing my white blood cells. This necessitated a very expensive shot of Neulasta, which forces the bone marrow to pump out white cells at a rapid rate, each time the Taxetere is given. What they don't tell you is that Taxetere can cause changes in your fingernails and tenderness in your fingertips, as well as a certain fragility and inflammation in the skin of your hands. The first two chemos of this were not so bad, although I experienced a lot of fatigue, but the third caused a chemical burn of the skin on the back of my hands and fingers (which in one of their patients at least went up her arms also) and very tender finger tips, from which I am slowly recovering. So I am through with sysemic chemo now, just in time to help Alan get through his hip replacement surgery.

Alan had state-of-the-art surgery, "minimally invasive," by a Dr. John Dearborn at a hospital in Fremont in a little building separate from the main building, using "space suits" and filtered air for ensuring a clean environment. They even made Alan wash twice with a special soap the night before and morning of the surgery and wear "freshly laundered" clothes and bedclothes, bedding, etc. Dr. Dearborn has a reputation for getting his patients out of the hospital within a day or two of the operation and having them walk a little right away. He doesn't cut across the muscle but down it, and the incision is only 3-4 inches long. Herman would have loved it!

On the scary side, we met two women who had had both hips and both knees replaced! One of them was a former gymnast, so there is often a price for committed athletes to pay in middle age or older.

I was exhausted by the time I brought Alan home, because I had only gotten about four to five hours of sleep for four nights running. On Monday Alan got an early morning echocardiogram as part of the pre-op, because Dr. Dearborn was worried, given Alan's history of congestive heart failure and the atrial fibrillation of 1996-98, but his ejection fraction was normal, thank God! He got through the operation just fine, and was allowed to eat as soon as he woke up and left the ICU. He had a little more pain than normal, I think, and had a bad first night until they got it under control with a percocet, but they gave him only Norcos (high dose Vicodin) to take home, and he has been in a lot of pain. I'm trying to get him to take the pain pills on a regular schedule, which he is too much in pain to do for himself and I was too exhausted to do for the first 48 hours since he has been home.

The doctor made all his patients stop all their vitamins and supplements three days before the operation and after until they are off coumadin, because he does not know whether or not they might interfere with the coumadin blood thinner he put them on to prevent post-operative blood clots, and they all have to wear anti-embolism stockings. We go back down to get Alan an ultrasound on Monday as a precaution to check for possible blood clots.

So that's the story. Sorry to hear about the bout of flu. There was a particularly nasty one going around this area, but neither Alan nor I have gottenit so far.

Apologies to Nora for missing her birthday. My chemo brain confused her birthday with my sister's, which is very close to Nora's, so once I had sent the card, I somehow convinced myself that I had sent one to Nora as well, although I now believe I never did! So a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It looks like a great birthday bash at Disneyland!

Love,
Liz

Hi, Not much has changed - I'm still recovering my hip surgery -- but I caught some kind of flu or something that I've had for 2 weeks now. It goes from nausea to headache to nausea and back to headache -- but mainly I can't sleep -- when I lay down I feel like I'm drowning. But in the last couple of days I've been feeling a little better. What's really depressing is that that's all I can think of to say -- oh - I've been watching a lot of TV - Angel and Charmed reruns (I'm getting ready to watch the Buffy Dvd again). You Asked. Hope you've been doing better.

Love,
Alan

Doreen--hi!

Good news on the cancer front--my CA125 marker is not only a healthy 5 (down from 3,380 last August, when I was diagnosed), but my surgeon says that it should be a reliable marker for me, since it was so high to begin with. Next week I go for my first post-chemo PET-CAT scan (meow), which we expect to be negative. Then, I have to decide whether to get opened up again for a "second look" to see if there are any microscopic cancers the double scans missed and when I have healed from that I get to have more chemo--this time injected into my peritoneal cavity. The long-term prognosis is supposed to be significantly better than if I waited until my cancer reoccurs to the point where it can be detected by the noninvasive techniques mentioned above. I'm not sure I fully understand the difference, and my other doctor, the one trained in nutritional medicine in addition to his M.D, thinks I would be better off betting on my immune system, which he has been trying to bolster, instead of putting me through the stresses of another operation and more chemo.

So I have a lot of thinking to do. Meanwhile, my vitamin C infusion clinic has become a pretty good support group, because I tend to see a lot of the same people there when I go twice a week, and they have mostly been fighting a recurrence of their cancers, which stem from 10-15 years ago, so I am way ahead of the game. Also, taking IV vitamin C concurrently with the chemo supposedly makes the chemo more effective as well as the side effects less severe. I have had very little nausea--hardly any to speak of, but the taxotere did give me a chemical burn on my hands and now edema in my legs. The burn lasted only a couple weeks and has healed nicely; the edema could take months to resolve.

Meanwhile, Alan is definitely off the crutches and has less and less need for the cane, that is until he got sick. I am still doing all the errands, what yard work I can (way behind in that) and housework and spending a lot of time driving to and from various medical appointments and trying very hard not to lose any more sleep. The first three weeks of April when he was preparing to go for the surgery, the surgery and the recovery were quite exhausting. Now the big goal is to try to get back on a sleep schedule in sync with my circadian rhythm. It's been out of sync for years, and may be part of the reason my immune system did not deal with the cancer. Proper sleep in complete darkness is necessary they say for optimal melatonin production, which is an important element of our immune systems.

Sorry we haven't been more in touch, but things are on the upswing! Hope you and Nora are doing OK.

Love,
Liz

7/13/2008:

Speaking of infection, you should know that Liz is back in the hospital. She has bacteremia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacteremia) and is receiving intravenous antibiotics. She has an abdominal absess that they are draining. The good news is that it doesn't appear to be the cancer. She is taking calls on her cellphone (510.417.5085) if you'd like to wish her well.

Oh, and Monday (July 14) is Liz's birthday.

Liz is finally home from the hospital. All went well. What a lousy way to spend her birthday (July 14) and most of the month! I sent her a gift basket, which she opened last night. She called to tell me how much she loved it. It's got bath/spa items, candles and tasty treats ... things I hope she will take the time to enjoy. If you're reading this Liz, take some time for yourself and quit worrying about Alan and me and everyone else for a little while! Light the candle, relax in the tub and eat some cookies, endulge a little, your body needs it.

Subject: Happy Birthday to me, happy birth.....
Date: 12/2/2008 5:35:50 AM Pacific Standard Time

Dear Doreen,

Thanks for the birthday card -- sorry it's taken so long to answer but I am also having a hard time getting my act together.

I can't even begin to tell you how the ordeal is going -- so Liz is going to call you. It seems that candida has reared it's ugly head and could be responsible for a lot her problems. She's had continual diarrhea for over a year now. And there is a vaginal tumor that needs radiation. CAT scan tommorrow.

I have to come down and talk to George to see what's left. Probably next spring. I am sure that Dad would be going crazy over the new "Depression" that he continually warned me was on the way. There will never be another Depression like the one he lived through -- but there was no way to convince him. Property values rebound - when is the question.

Liz has hair again - but it looks like there is more chemo on the way. Sorry to hear about your malladies, but misery loves company. Compared to you and Liz, I really can't complain -- except for the depression -- I have never felt so miserable.

You probably are wondering what you got me for my birthday? BABYLON FIVE (the complete series). At Amazon, if you buy them one season at a time you save $80 over the complete series price.

Our cat "007" (who disapeared about 4 months ago). I had given him up for dead (we checked the pound, ran around the neighborhood looking for him, etc...) months ago. Shows up at the back door, hung around for a couple of days - and gone again. We figure he must have found an indoor gig.

Say hello to Nora.

Love,
Alan

Liz called me ... things have gotten worse ... in addition to the tumor in her vaginal wall, an x-ray has revealed spots on her lungs. I hope everyone will say an extra prayer for her tonight.

I can't believe she's gone. I never cried harder before in my life than I did this afternoon when my brother called me. I LOVE YOU, LIZ... MY SISTER-in-law AND FRIEND. Rest in Peace. <3 -Doreen

Doreen

You have my sympathies.

This has not been a good weekend for either of us. My mother, quite possibly, might have died this past Friday (5/1/2009). Out of nowhere she went into what some at the hospital are now saying was Diabetic Shock. It was the scariest thing in the world. She was alive, with her eyes open, but completely unresponsive. We'd talk right to her, and she'd stare back at us with a vacant look on her face. The phrase, "The lights are on but no one's home" is the best way to describe it. The ambulance took her to the hospital this past Friday evening.

I'm happy to report that when my father and I went to visit her in the hospital this past Saturday, she was 100 times better then the day before. She was awake, talking, and back to her crotchety old self. She's still in the hospital, but may be coming out tomorrow or Wednesday.

Yours Truly,
Paul Rudoff
