Beatnik Press and our Pod Tour Allies have also joined forces with Simon Jackson and his organization, the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition, in their battle with the Canadian Government to protect the Spirit Bear and its habitat.

The Kermode bear, or Ursus Americanus Kermodei, is the scientifically recognized name of all bears - black and white - that make up this rare subspecies found only on Canada’s west coast. But it is the white Kermode or spirit bear, as it is perhaps better known, which has brought attention to the subspecies and prompted questions about both its origin and its future.

Very little was known about the Kermode bear until recently and there is still much to learn - however what is known is that it is genetically unique - not a color phase or genetic freak - and to survive, a large population of black bears must remain stable to sustain the gene that produces the white bear.

The BC government created a ban on hunting the white bears but, it afforded them no protected habitat and offered no protection to their black bear cousins.

Funny things about Governments, they seldom act unless they feel they are being watched. Let them know they ARE being watched!
