Music Nights - Freedom from Fear - July 17th
headspace present the first of a series of music events, Music Nights for young
people living in the Inner West/Central Sydney Area featuring Sydney’s own
KillaQueenz plus MC’s and Bands from the Inner West.
Music Nights is a series of concerts raising awareness of mental health issues
and encouraging young people to get out and express themselves. The first
Music Nights event follows Refugee Week; looking at raising awareness and
creating connection among the young people of the Inner West, including new
arrivals who have come here as refugees.
Music Nights is presented by headspace in partnership with Marrickville Youth
Resource Centre (MYRC), Marrickville Council and Megaphon Studios. The
‘Music nights’ will explore themes of mental health, alcohol and other drugs, local
services will be invited to take part in the event.

Music Nights aims to:
• Engage in conversation and reduce the stigma of mental health issues
and/or problematic drug & alcohol use amongst young people
• engage young people in headspace and co-located youth services
• provide a drug and alcohol free space for young people to come together
and socialise
• promote and support creativity among young people

A group of young volunteers have helped us develop the theme, structure and
content of the upcoming Music Nights planned for July 17th to be held at
Marrickville Youth Resource Centre. The night will include food, information, a
performance by local Sierra Leone young people; bands and hip hop artists,
headliners KillaQueenz, information on Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol. We will
also have young people sharing their stories of recovery from mental illness and
drug abuse.

headspace – The National Youth Mental Health Foundation:
Established and funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia in 2006,
headspace – the National Youth Mental Health Foundation – is providing
solutions to young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing mental health and
wellbeing issues because we know that most adult mental health disorders begin
between the ages of 12 and 25.

With 30 one-stop-shops, headspace offers a range of youth-friendly health
professionals including but not limited to GPs, psychologists, youth workers and
drug & alcohol counselors. In addition headspace has developed a website which
provides information, advice and other places to get help. headspace is making a
difference where it is needed most – our young people.

Some fact and stats:
Mental health is the number one issue affecting young people in Australia today
– however many do not have ready access to treatment or are reluctant to seek
that help and this often leads to drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, homelessness
and isolation
Mental Illness can affect anyone at anytime!

We know that around 14% of young people aged 12 -17 years and around 27%
of young people aged 18-24 years experience a mental disorder in any given 12
month period. Over 75% of all serious mental health problems commence before
the age of 25 years, but only 1 our of every four of these young people will
actually seek help.

If you are unable to attend then we would be happy to meet with you at a suitable
time to talk about headspace, we have young people from our Youth Reference
Group, headspace staff and management who are able to be interviewed.
