(This is an old song ~ a little over a decade old, but it's a story about a guy who was my supervisor years ago at an electronic assembly plant, and just thought I'd share it with you.)

Like a cumbersome bear walkin' out of the woods,
you could find Earl walkin' down the hallways.
A full head of hair, and a beard to match it,
you could see him every work day
as he made his rounds through the assembly lines
keeping track of faces,
keeping track of times.
Oh, you could always count on him
to be there ~
Big Earl.

He was a country boy born in West Virginia,
but he made his home in Arizona.
Big Earl, he loved the girls
'specially the pretty ones,
but for many years, he stayed a loner.
Then he met a woman who could match his stride
and he knew without a doubt he wanted her for his bride.
Oh, what a happy man he was ~
the day he found her.

He was a fun lovin' man who never placed a bet
unless he knew for certain he wouldn't lose.
He even bet poor Heidi that he would marry before her
for fifty dollars and a bottle of booze.
Next day he came to work with a ring on his hand,
for he'd known all along he'd be a married man.
And poor Heidi ~
she learned the hard way . . .
NEVER bet with Big Earl!

A strong and healthy man, he never missed a day
in all the years of his career.
And he got recognition from the company . . .
for always being there.
No, there wasn't anyone who could ever recall
a day when Earl had called in sick.
So when that first call came, it was so hard to believe ~
Could it be that Earl was playin' some kind of trick?

Well, the news spread fast of how they'd found some tumours . . .
and it didn't look to good for him.
But Big Earl was just that kind of guy
who wasn't one to just give in.
And though the pain was more than any man could bear,
the people found his sense of humour ~ still was there.
For even leavin' this world couldn't take that away
from Big Earl.
===
The last time he and I talked was shortly after Chernobyl.
And he was glad he got to live when he did.
For the world had wrought so many different changes
from the time he'd been a kid.
And he said that if the world should end right now,
at least he'd lived his life to the brim.
And that's the way I'll remember Big Earl . . .
every time I think of him.

Like a cumbersome bear walkin' out of the woods . . .

Big Earl . . .

KIM,

Thank's for posting the song. I ejnoyed the story as you thought I would. While reading it I could just picture "Big Earl" in my mind. Seems like I've known several fellows here in WV who could fit  what he must have been like.I worked for a while in  a factory in Elk Grove Villiage outside of Chicago for a while just out of high school. People from WV were highly respected for their work-ethic. I was told by my supervisor there who was from Iowa that people from here were sought after.Hard workers who, like Earl , would hardly ever miss work.Hope we're known as good people too.

The other song about diversity is right where I'm headed--50. Kindof hit home as I'll turn 50 this year. I cannot believe I'm that old. The song helped.

My nephews are in a bluegrass band (they're on my myspace page). They sing a nice song about WV written by Don Rigsby  called "Bluestone Mountain". My sister is writing a song for them about Wizard's Clip. It's an old ghost story about an incident in Middleway, WV. She hasn't finished it yet but I can't wait to hear how it all comes out. Guess they'll come up with the music for it.

Again, I enjoyed it. My wife hasn't seen it yet but i'm sure she'll enjoy it too. Keep in touch, Kim.. Take care and be safe.
