Thanks for another penetrating analysis, Jerry!

(Length seems to be a problem with every Judd Apatow film... He definitely needs an editor.)

The Fan Girl Next Door

Super review Jerry!

Isn't the soundtrack to (500) Days Of Summer the best?

Bobby the Inglorious Bastard
Robert Morgan

Best review I've yet read of this movie. As much as I loved it I'm about 50/50 on that third act. It felt like a completely different film and even though Apatow remained honest and true to his characters until the end it was all a bit excessive. The heart and soul of FUNNY PEOPLE is in the stand-up comedy and the movie should have concentrated more on that instead of having Apatow abandon what made his story work for another expensive home movie with his wife and daughters.

Thank you. I agree, it did become a very expensive home movie for his family.

Very insightful write up, Jerry. I love the comparisons to Kevin Smith. I'm still interested.

I adore Kevin Smith. Thank you. I also heart Judd Apatow, but this one was not as good as I thought it could have been.

Jerry, I love the fact that we used a lot of the same adjectives when writing about this film (petty, melancholy), and you bring up some wonderful points that I missed (such as it being the Bizzaro version of Entourage).  However... I thought the last third of the film was essential and showed how little George learned, and how little Ira had changed.  Ira (his lie to Leo notwithstanding) was a nice guy with a good moral system.  Being the conscience of the film, and trying to set the other characters straight showed that even prolonged exposure to George's life wasn't going to fully change him, regardless of the parasitic behavior.
But, as I say that, i understand from what angle you're coming from, and the movie doesn't make a strong case if it is just another bromance.
Great review, though.  I'm glad I waited to read it until I wrote mine.

Thank you. I liked your review a lot.
I just felt the film was lacking toward the end, it felt tacked on.
George learned next to nothing. I am not sure he really changes at all given all that he goes trhough in the film.
