Dissatisfied with the range and quality of our local garden center's plant offerings, we had the notion to start the plants we desired from seed. It seemed that all we needed were pots, soilless mix, and a sunny windowsill. It soon became apparent, however, that windowsills are not always sunny or warm, and few are wide enough to hold the caliber of offerings we were about to yield. Not to mention-growing seedlings tends to be rather messy, as the other half of our home gardening team very firmly pointed out.
Our next thought was of contraptions that had been seen in garden-supply catalogs over the years. When comparing and price-shopping, however, it quickly became apparent that the well-built ones are not cheap.
It was then that the decision was made to build our own. We asked, "What do seeds need to germinate and grow on?" Light, warmth, and water seemed to be the basics. Provide these, and they'll grow anywhere, it seems, even in an out-of-the-way corners.
