This has been rolling around for a while... I had never written a lullabye before, and it made me remember so keenly what it was like when my daughter Virginia was little.

Sweet Hour at Close of Day
Sweet hour at close of day
Children's voices echo as they play
Twilight seems to last forever
Sweet hour at close of day

Fireflies light the way to bed
Blinking on the old windowsill
Putting happy dreams in sleepy heads
Soon their sweet breath will turn soft and still

Sweet hour at close of day
Children plead for longer play
Twilight softens everything
Sweet hour at close of day

When the goodnights have been said
And the litany of kisses has been filled
After all the stories have been read
The sandman's handiwork will be revealed

Sweet hour at close of day
Children dream about tomorrow's play
Twilight deepens into blue gray night
Sweet hour at close of day

Wow, we talked about this at the beginning of the week, and then I forgot about it until right now. What a tender song! Just before I sat down at the computer I just peeked into Jacob's room to watch him sleep, and these lyrics capture that flutter in my heart as I watch him rest. I can't wait to hear the melody.
