Work for seven years. Put together a crackin' band and a wide-ranging repertory of original material.
But there ain't no place to play...unless one is willing to pay-to-play, which is how virtually all the venues here (and elsewhere, as I've been told) operate. Here they call it "alquiler de sala" (hall rental)...wherein the club owners risk nothing, having the band pay for the sound man, the postering, sometimes even the person at the door, with the musicians hoping they will attract enough paying public to at least cover such expenses.
Meanwhile, DJs are paid a handsome fee each night to press buttons, move slide controls and spin disks. They call themselves "musicians". Posters hail the "appearance" of such "musicians".
It's what the public wants. Fuck live music.
