Ok kids. Here's the thing. I don't really think reality TV is something one ought to take seriously. And I think a lot of the entertainment world agrees. With the exception of Grammy-Girl Kelly Clarkson, most reality people are whisked into oblivion the day the show is over, regardless of talent, style or moral fiber. That being said, I don't have a TV and don't watch those shows, so i am really talking from assumptions and little to no real information. So I figured I would stop being a closed-minded snob....
Here in California, in the throes of LA-dom, I had the pleasure of an audition for CBS' show Rockstar: SuperNova. This is the second in a series, the first of which was out to find the new lead singer for INXS. I was trying out to be the lead lady in the new band called SuperNova: "Supernova will feature drummer Tommy Lee (Motley Cre), Jason Newsted (Metallica) and Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses). The second edition of CBS's ROCK STAR will premiere on the Network this summer. After the winning singer is selected on CBS's ROCK STAR, Supernova will record an original album, to be co-written and produced by Butch Walker (hit songwriter/producer for Avril Lavigne, Pink) that will be released in the fall before the band embarks on a world tour starting in early 2007." So, those of you who know me and my music might consider this match a bit of a stretch...my sound being more folk/pop rock than Tommy Lee/Metal rock. I expected to be the only singer/songwriter woman with an acoustic Taylor and zero leather/tattoos. However, I figured I would just see how it went and have a little fun, because hey, what could it hurt? I'd be down to make a good impression on Butch Walker, right? The audition called for 3 cover songs or originals. Again, a little fear that this would be me out from behind the guitar pretending to be Miss I-Jump-Off-Stages-All-the-Time lady.
Well, I decided to stick to my guns (n' Roses...haha) and just go up there and do what it is I do. I had fun and played my songs, my way. During the first one, Jeremy, I rocked so hard I broke a string. And to my surprise, they loved it! They called me back and I went to the final round of the whole hoo-ha. I played them part of Clumsy, then a sweet soft version of All Along the Watchtower (I forgot the first line, had to ask the studio audience what it was, what a nerd!!!) Somehow, they still seemed enthusiastic and genuine about my performance. I was interviewed and chatted up and treated very kindly. It was actually one of the most comfortable and pleasant audition experiences I have had.
I don't hear whether I get on or not for a few weeks. And then I am not sure how long I have to decide if I am going to be that reality-tv girl. But I will have had my eyes opened that the reality universe is not all bad, regardless of whether or not I decide to be a part of it. The reality is: I am shockingly content with how I am, who I am and what I am today.
