Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I've blogged (been busy completing the script for FILM #4), so I thought I'd give some facts on THE BOX, just to clarify things for people.

- WB is releasing the film on October 30, 2009.  The release date has been shuffling around a bit, but this is common with studios, and everyone feels like this is the best date for the film.

- The film is completely finished.  Principal photography was completed in March 2008, and it was officially delivered to WB right before Christmas 2008.  A March 2009 release was briefly considered, but a Fall 2009 release was always a better fit.

- We shot in Massachusetts and Virginia.  The film takes place predominantly in Virginia, 1976.

- The running time is 1 hour 55 minutes long including end credits.

- The film was digitally photographed using the Panavision Genesis camera.  In my audio commentary on Tony Scott's Domino, I mentioned that I would never shoot a 1970s period piece using a digital camera.  My position on this changed when I saw David Fincher's extraordinary Zodiac.  It can be done.

- There is more than 300 visual effects shots, which required eight months of post-production. The digital work-flow of the Genesis was essential to completing these visual effects properly.

- Win Butler, Regine Chassagne (of Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, frequent collaborator with Arcade Fire) recorded more than 80 minutes of score for the film.

- Here is a list of artists whose songs appear in the film:  GRATEFUL DEAD, DEREK & THE DOMINOS, WILSON PICKETT, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND, SCOTT WALKER

-The official website for the film is www.thebox-movie.com - it will unveil sometime this summer.

This is my most personal film to date, and I'm very proud of how it turned out.

So that's an update from me.
I will continue to update you as things progress and expect more updates from our company Darko Entertainment (www.darko-entertainment.com) and our upcoming releases WORLD'S GREATEST DAD, I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL, and ROGUES GALLERY.

Well first thing is first I think that is awesome how you inform your fans whats going on. Because I have been wondering very much about "The box" ever since I heard about it. You have some good actors in this movie which I am going to have to say out loud. Cameron Diaz does intimidate me a bit because she is known for her comedy roles. But with you as a director and Donnie Darko being my favorite films of all time. Which I just currently bought on Blu-ray I seriously think you can pull this movie off if the script is written well and you as the director. If you say it's the best film you have created and you are proud of it. Then I will be the first in line at the theater. BTW I would love to be an "EXTRA" in one of your movies.... Just a dream though but Thanks for the update.

Very excited, Richard. Considering that it is an adaptation and seems so different from Southland Tales and Donnie Darko, I find it very interesting for you to say that this is your most personal film to date. I personally can't wait for it.

I'm really looking forward to this. Great release date too. Horror/thrillers tend to do very good around Halloween.

Of course I can't expect or have certain expectations about this movie just yet. I was told by friends to have an open mind with DDarko, then told others the same when STales came out. I will be there once again for The Box. Let us hope the rest of the world catches up.

Richard,

Congratulations on another finished project. I was wondering if you would be willing to field a couple of questions.
How was the latitude and dynamic range of shooting on the Genesis compared to your previous work with shooting film? Also, do you think you will continue to shoot your films digitally? What do you think of the Red One and the upcoming new camera lineup from Red?

I am looking forward to watching The Box. It has been a while since I have seen a new film with a meaningful story.
Again, congratulations on completing another film! I am sure it will be great! :}

Please tell me the Scott Walker song is Plastic Palace People. Although, I don't know how well that song would suit this film. I absolutely LOVE that song. It creates such a great atmosphere with dark fantasy elements.

Jesus. Is this a remake of a Twilight Zone episode? I loved DD and ST, but really. It has been done and done well--done perfectly in only 13 minutes.

btw, you should totally go and watch the german dubbed version of southland tales. It gives it a more otherworldly feel, even if you don't understand it.

The Box -  I can't wait to see this movie! I was telling my daughter about this. I had told her someone needed to redo this. I was thinking it was Alfred Hitchcock for some reason. Someone on here said it is a remake of a Twilight Zone episode. My word, how long ago was that? To have this scenario put forth in a modern generation, brilliant! If it's half as good as Donnie Darko, it will so be worth the wait.
I don't watch much TV, so pretty much what I see on here is all I know. Thanks for posting here and keeping us informed.

Awesome, I've been wondering when this film would be released since I first heard about it.  The plot really grabbed me... original, but most people will still be able to relate if they've ever been through hard times- and who hasn't?
It looks like you have a great cast.  A great score, too, from the sound of it... and obviously a top-notch directing/producing team.  I can't wait to see it.  :)
