I didn't realise how much I was dreading my turn, until I started to type. Not sure if it is my inability to type or my lack of up to date "cool music". So I am looking over at my stereo and realising there are different moods of music lying there but I listen to music mostly on my mini disc player, which I never want to give up and make way for mp3 players. I spent a small fortune on it a few years back, when I could have the used the cash in a more sensible way. So it holds a special place in my "Oh sod it" top 5. Well here goes .
1. Spiritualised-Let it come down. This album is on my mini disc regularly. It fits into all moods especially, staring at nothing in particular on the tube. (the clockwork orange, in Glasgow) I love J. Spaceman's single mindedness to achieve what he wants, the melodies, the euphoria and the big music. Standout track will have to be "I didn't mean to hurt you" Words that I would love to have chosen to say sorry and a massive sound. Great to see live. 2. The Last Shadow Puppets - Age of the Understatement. Maybe the only time I have bought a CD single and on hearing it in the shop and asking the assistant "Excuse me, I know that sounds like the young guy from The Arctic Monkeys but It's really good, what is it? Oh I guess you get to certain age and earn an attitude. What a sound. Those strings, the rhythm and great dramatic harmonies.
3. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds- Dig Lazarus Dig. It took me a while to learn to like Nick Cave. Our friend John McGowan would come to my house with some records and a few beers and try to get these records on my player but it was a Goth free zone I told him. But once I heard "Straight To You" I was a convert and quickly conceded there was genius there. This latest is no exception, full of great music and great stories. Stand out track (at the moment) "Hold on to yourself".
4. Kings Of Leon- Because Of The Times. Have to agree with everything Ronnie said previously. Only acquired the album recently and love the Pixies-like "Charmer". Will stay on top of the stereo for a while yet.
5. Tom Waits- Used Songs. Keith let us know that Tom Waits is playing in Edinburgh in July so bit of excitement in our house as he one of Elaine's real favourites. "Used Songs" is a really good compilation of his material from the 70's. Elaine's standout track is "I never talk to strangers" a duet with Bette Midler. Has that great feeling of two drunk lovers having a go. My standout track would be "(Looking for )The Heart Of Saturday Night. This song has been with me and my friends as we grew up and reminds of great nights in John's flat with some beer and great company. Cheers boys.
Thanks for indulging me. I hope you find my mutterings someway entertaining. Cheers James.
