"...There’s definitely something about the Butler Williams. So much so, that this EP most probably marks their long awaited ascent from the quieter unplugged circuits of Manchester’s thriving acoustic underground. Butler-Williams have the essence of what might be branded as fireside –folk, but in truth and in full evidence of this mini-album of sorts, they are one of those rare acts that can invoke a very real intimacy. It’s a closeness that can be found in the opening track, the gently strident “You Will Learn”, quickly followed by “Set In Stone”. On this track Noel Williams casts an intricate backdrop of picked acoustic guitars and taking the main vocal, narrates in almost whispering melodics. Chris Butler's superb tones illuminate the rest of the EP. The title track, an endearing song, resplendent in double tracked “whoas”, then melts into the appealing journal that is “Tighten Your Belt”; a short sub two minute narrative carried by a lilting soundtrack of drifting guitar chords. “Step back From The Crowd” is a solid, more traditionally structured number that convincingly mixes folk with the slow, milling machinations of indie pop and jingling electric guitars. This is an EP that Butler Williams can be proud of, masterfully produced by talented musician, Ben McGarvey – it’s been a long time coming, as it mingles a sense of experimentation with a condensed confidence and a genuinely authentic, organic flair. As a particular bonus for those buying the record (which is due out in vinyl) there will also be access to a rather thrilling remix of “You Will Learn” by The Real Dolls; a treatment that is both sensitive to the mood, but full of impulsive, striking tempos and stereoscopic effects - yet retaining that spectacularly mellow glaze. Butler Williams – not folk then, but utterly unmissable..."
