Who Gives Kudos:

The best part of playing music is the people along the way.  I give the little gift of live music here and there as I travel around with my guitar, and in return end up with mountains of fresh perspective and new friends.

Last night I played an old fashioned 'barn is built' celebration to multiple generations of folks.  There was dancing, eating, drinking and laughter abounding, and the view from my little stage was due south above the cities, looking across the long Colorado foothills.  This type of celebration has been going on for so long in human history, I could not help but smile often while singing. Over the mountains the sun vanished and then stars slowly showed themselves.

In the midst of a break, I sat down with a South African woman and had a bite of something homemade.  The conversation veered this way and that, but ended on the notion that she was the luckiest person in the world.  'Why?' I asked. 'Because I live in America.' she said. 'I am free to work hard and become anyone I want, pursue any line of work I choose, my children are getting educated and a yellow bus comes to pick them up.  And people in this country are the most open I have ever met in all my travels.  You are truly free people'

I asked her what she saw in the current challenges, the bailout, the politics, the debt, over-consumption?  She told me that she had lived all over the world, and that all countries had problems, either as concerning, or worse.   She thought for a moment and said: 'The worst problem for America may be the lack of appreciation for all you have.'

As I wandered back up to play more music, the temperature was autumn perfect.  I noticed many couples hugging, young children sneaking extra cookies, and high school girls giggling after a handsome young fella.  A group of men were off in the corner talking sports, and much of the food was gone, what was left being re-organized by two grandmothers.

I picked up my guitar and thought to myself...  Indeed.
