Saturday, January 27, 2007
I just don't know what I was thinking---I thought all Native people would be upset by some racist comic using a racial slur on national television, but I guess I was wrong!  "larry the cable guy" goes on the Jay Leno show and uses the term "squaw skank" in one of his jokes(?) and almost no one says anything about it.  I remember once talking to my friend Irene Bedard and she said something to the effect that it was deemed okay to insult Native people because we were the forgotten people---her words never rang truer than today when I tried to get people to say something about the offense against our people and especially our Native women---as Native men we are expected to protect our women but it seems as though we have become so complacent that even such a derrogatory comment as this does not warrant any action.  I hear our people complain that they are tired of such insulting treatment but when it comes down to doing something about it, no one does anything---well almost no one, I and a too few others are at least trying to make an issue of this.  I have given you all the e-mail address of mr. cable guy and also the number of Mohegan sun Casino where mr. cable guy is booked in sept.---it's okay for him to take our money but not okay to apologize for his behaviour.  This is our fault for as long as we allow the direspect, it will surely come.  Yes Irene, we are the forgotten people, but now we are forgetting about ourselves!  Hopefully what I have written will touch some of you and you will decide to make a difference---it is time to STAND UP, SPEAK UP AND NOT GIVE UP THE FIGHT for our dignity, for our future, for our children---you may write to mr. cable guy at www.larrythecableguy.com or at his Myspace at www.myspace.com/larrythecableguy the number for the Mohegan Sun Casino where mr. cable guy is booked in Sept. is (860) 862-6100 or (860) 862-6150 call the Mohegan tribe and tell them how you feel, see if our dignity is more important than the dollar.  Mr. cable guys managers number is (310) 279-1123 maybe he can tell Mr. cable guy how you feel.  Hopefully we can start to make a change in the spirit of Crazy Horse, Goyakla, Sitting Bull and all the other warriors that have gone before us---Respectfully, Graywolf

...and I thought the country was coming around to respect the indigeous peoples of this land.  Silly me.  I'm white as white can be (2nd generation American, 1/2 Italian, 1/2 Lithuanian) but everytime I think of what was lost and can never be restored...I feel sick to my stomach.

So why did this man (?) feel he had to stoop so low as to use that term in a joke?  What a moron.  Let's turn this into another Michal Richards-type controversy, shall we?

Booz Hoo! I say Bravo Graywolf for spreading the word and being a true warrior protecting the qwe's or women. I have made many emails and reposts & went on perspectives.com to put in my .02 worth. Why now? Why are so many Native Americans are getting complacent, after all our anger at the whites & wannabies for taking almost everything from us. Chi Miig Wetch Graywolf for protection the ladies of Turtle Isand and for keeping us informed. I think all of you who are Native and have an attitude against the whites should stand for something besides anger of the past transgressions. Once the women were held in high reguard by our people. I have seen many a qwe being disrespected by her Native Brothers on the trail. Stop crying about the past if you are part of the present problem. Allowing our names & images to be used by 'Madison Ave' and not Honoring the women, Elders & Warriors, going off the good red road, and living for the present instead of the next 7 generations and chasing the almighty buck. IF YOU DON"T STAND FOR SOMETHING... YOU WILL FALL FOR EVERYTHING. Aho ~Windfeather

Thought of the Day

Disturbing Trends !!!!!

A growing tolerance in this “Me for Me” society has created an imbalance in the system. What is legal for some is now not legal for others. A new intolerance has developed.

The ACLU just sued our public school system where I live, over a gay club (PRIDE) that wanted to form and hold meetings in the school buildings. The school denied the request, so the ACLU came in, sued, and now not only is the school forced to have tolerance training, (adding expense to the tax payers here), but PRIDE may meet after school on school property, and it is now illegal, punishable by expulsion, to make an offensive statement towards a gay or even speak and say that you might believe the gay lifestyle to be morally wrong.

On the other hand, Larry the Cable Guy, goes on Jay Leno and makes vulgar and offensive comments about the Native American culture and even more offensive statements about Native American women. Will the ACLU now go and sue the Jay Leno Show and Larry the Cable Guy??? Will the ACLU force the Jay Leno Show and Larry the Cable Guy to go to tolerance training at their own expense?? Or will this act of intolerance, offensive and vulgar comments, be racked up as “Freedom of Speech” and dismissed like many other things in our me for me society.

Freedom of Speech, allows me to write this, just as it allows Larry to make offensive statements against Native American women, Larry the Cable Guy has that right. I/we have to be tolerant of his statements.

Just because I have to tolerate Larry the Cable Guy’s offensive statements, doesn’t , mean I can’t do something or if it offended you , doesn’t mean you can’t do something

If you are offended by the statements of Larry the Cable Guy there is much that you can do!!!!!!!

Since we live in the age of “me for me” “chasing the American day-dream”, MONEY plays an important part of that society. Want to effectively change something that offends you, do it with money. When you affect someone’s wallet you will in turn affect their behavior.

Call the sponsors of Jay Leno show, tell them you are offended by the statements of Larry the Cable Guy about Native American women, tell them that since they sponsor the Jay Leno show, that must mean they endorse such statements, so with that in mind you will not be buying any more of their products. Freedom of speech allows Larry to say such things and we have to tolerate Larry and his freedoms, but free trade allows us to buy anyone’s products. So we will not buy products of sponsors of the Jay Leno show.

Do the same thing with the sponsors of Larry the Cable Guy. Although all of these people have the right and freedom to express themselves, if everyone who was offended writes one letter, to sponsors, this will affect their incomes, and if you affect someone’s income, you might just affect their behavior, comments and lyrics.

Has political correctness, touted as the way to promote tolerance, actually created a new form of intolerance?? Something to think about!!!!

Just one man’s opinion. As always; put the wind in your hair and keep the sun to your back. Be good and stay safe. Peace, Love & Prosperity to all.

I stand with you too, Graywolf. Your words are strong when strength is needed.

There are many ways to spend our minutes and our hours at the computer. Let's give a few of these minutes, these hours, to the walking of what is sacred. Let us stand for Leonard Peltier, let us stand to defend Sacred Sites, let us stand to prevent the desecration of our Ancestors, let us stand up to defend our animal brothers and stand to protect and defend our Mother Earth; let us also stand and respect ourselves.

Respecting ourselves respects our Ancestors and our Children who come after us.

Peace is the way
Everywhere peace abounds
The grace of our forgiveness abounds more
Still the words of the white man
Continue to scalp our souls
Those who stand with us
Have a heart of an Elder
They are welcomed
At the great council of peace
Now my path begins
Elders have warned me
Not to take the path of war
This is not our way
Today I disobey the words of knowledge
For my heart cannot sit at the fire
While words of death
Destroy my people
Creator forgive this warrior
For what he must do
The keeper of wars is my name
Warriors from all nations
Custer awaits another last stand

The more that speaks out the more it will get around ..Your a Gentle Man with a strong heart ..I have wrote to all I could think of so we will see where this all goes ..Best to you and All that believe in the Dreams ..Of being you ...Hugs and smiles Debbie

I had found this to share

Roses are red NATIVES are brown
That's my race so don't mess around
My NATIVE pride I will not hide
My NATIVE race I will not disgrace
My NATIVE blood flows hot & true
My NATIVE peeps I will stand by you
Thru thick & thin till the day we die
Our NATIVE flag always stands high

I yell this poem louder than all the rest

Can I repost this as bulletin & how do we get ahold of Jay Leno??? He needs to say something to acknowledge the offense & where can I hear or see a transcript of what he said? Thanks, I would say many care, but I did explain to you in an email to your myspace that there is so much going on all over, not that this is the least of our worries, between NA being turned out in the cold, to protest to protect Medicine Lake in N. Ca, to the upcoming LPSG march & rally in Tacoma & the Anti- war rally in DC, sometimes one is left to wonder where to start. I will follow up on this though...I actually mae my self stay home vs going out to a Powwow or to go see some native performers in Puyallup...I am just on overwhelm right now! Many are...but keep putting this in front of us...it was poste & reposted though on my space when it first happened, so don't lose heart, ok?

Graywolf,

Irene hit the nail on the head.  Native American's are the forgotten people. No truer fact of this exists than to see the conditions on Pine Ridge Reservation.  How can our nation and even are brothers and sisters forget a nation of 40,000 people in our "backyards"?

If a people allow themselves to become forgotten - then they will be. I believe that due to all the atrocities of a previous century upon our First People, they might have wanted to be forgotten by the Government of this land.  Who can blame anyone for wanting a warring nation to forget you existed?  They'd leave you alone.  The problem is - the rest of us have left them alone as well.  And that is why there is a climate of apathy and forgetfullness of about those who this land was given to - our Native brother's and sisters.

If any other group of people were being slammed by Larry the Cable Guy, or any other comic or entertainer there would be outrage like with Michael Richards (Kramer) being raked over the coals for his racists slurs ... but Larry?  Little to no response.  It is far past time that our voices are joined in concern and change for such racial slurs and change made.  It's long past time.

This too reminds me of a comment Tantoo Cardinal said she made to Kevin Costner during the making of Dances with Wolves.  He asked her if they should shoot the wolf or let it live in the movie.  She told him, to shoot the wolf because people didn't care about seeing Indian's die - they were insensitive to it, but they'd care about the wolf dying.  How said of a statement of fact is that?? We have become totally apathetic to the death of a people, like it is second nature. If we don't stand up for each other how do we expect this attitude to ever change?

Graywolf, thank you for leading this fight and spurring us on to do the same. I will right Larry right now and post my complaint to Mohegan Sun. I have been to Mohegan Sun a number of times.  The Mohegan Tribe will hear from me as well.

Blessings!

Yes we get the message and despite spell check! :)  Who knows...maybe one GOOD thing that might come out of Larry's idiotic slur is that we finally get mad again and start forcing a change regarding Native People's rather than sitting around and allowing this slow death that has prevailed for much too long.  Thank you for mentioning the very real fact of starvation on Pine Ridge because 97% of Americans have NO clue whatsoever and don't believe this to be a fact in today's America.

I blew past it the first time, but in reading Larry's post on his latest tour... my God, he started his tour this year in the very town I now live in - Lakeland, FL.  Not that I'd pay to see Larry although I've seen him on TV previously but ... well ... had I known he was here and I'm sure he's been using that line in his routine for awhile now... I'd have been there with a sign of protest!  I certainly will be if he comes my way again..........

Having written 2 times to both Leno and Larry the idiot guy, we have received no response. Is it that we are too few in numbers or just too unimportant to bother with? Now I am getting really angry...and you don't want to anger either Apaches or Cherokees. Maybe we should all go to the Leno show and disrupt his show abit? Wish I could....We all need to keep writing and calling...we can't let this die. Maybe we need to contact our local TV stations and let them know how we feel about Larry and his tasteless humor. Any suggestions??

Unfortunately, it is yes on both counts---we just don't matter enough because we are too few---we are the forgotten people and now we are forgetting ourselves---forgetting all the ancestors that went before us and fought and died to save what is left of our culture and traditions.  Just because the fight is hard doesn't mean we should give up---keep contacting everyone you can and contact all your friends on your friends list and keep re-posting my blog ---if we keep stirring the pot, we just may get it to boil over!  Only we can make a change for the better, ALL POWER TO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF TURTLE ISLAND!

At first, I reacted the same way I reacted to the N-bomb controversy.  I thought people need to realize that this is just humor and we need to loosen up.

But then I realized that some words can cut to the bone.  While I'm pretty tired of the whole "Politically Correct" BS that has evolved in this country, I stopped and realized something.  Some words should just die.

Black people in this country were shocked by the use of the 'N word' by a white comedian, but black folks have used the word as a term of endearment to each other for years.  Funny thing, Native American folk don't subscribe to this treatment of each other.

Here's a wake-up call for Larry the Table Scrap:  Be funny... but NOT at the expense of the people who deserve our complete respect.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but some words will devastate me.  Let's learn mutual respect.  It might make life a little better for all of us.

Bravo, Graywolf!

Your friend,

MP

I have written to NBC, ACLU, The BIA,Jay Leno as well as written a letter to a friend that works in D.C at the capitol. I can only hope that somthing is done about this situation. Our people have sacrificed so much over the years and still remained A PROUD STRONG NATION!!! There seems to be a tolerance when it comes to Native Americans that would never be allowed in other races. The comment would never had been made of an African American Woman or of any other race for that matter, and Im sure that Larry The Cable Guy doesnt even know what was so offensive about the comment. That's what is the sad . I remember a story that was told to me by my mother when I was a child. She is 1/2 Creek and 1/2 white. My great grandfather was on the 1st legislature for the Muskogee Nation. When my Grandmother (White) married my Grandfather(native)she was dis-owned by her family for it. It was frowned upon then.Being raised on a ranch in O.K my mother was sick often in the winter months, so she went to stay with my grandmothers mom in Tulsa during winter and would go back to the ranch in the summer. She remembers going back to the city year after year in the winter and her grandmother scrubbing her and telling her she was dirty. Being a child she just thought she came back dirty from the ranch because she would spend her time playing outside. As an adult she realized her grandmother had been scrubbing her because she had gotten dark and she was trying to scrub the tan off of her!! In telling me this she made it clear I was never to allow ANYONE to wash away who I was. I was to be proud of myself and my people. In not doing anything we as a nation are letting this be washed away. This can not happen. I am a half blood 1/4 Creek 1/4 Cherokee but I am Proud of that part of me. I want my children to be proud of thier blood. I want my daughter to be proud of herself as a Native American Woman so I will keep writing. I hope everyone else does too. DO NOT LET THEM WASH THIS AWAY!!!

Graywolf,

I have written Larry at his site, his Myspace and NBC.  I also wrote the Mohegan Sun and the Mohegan Tribe where he is scheduled to appear.  I think until Larry apologizes - anyone in the vicinity of one of the venue's he is appearing at ought to consider taking the stance of picketing the event in protest of his slur until he makes a heartfelt apology.  I have a feeling (unfortunatley) that we may be on the picket line.  But if that is what it takes to "Git R Done" then I guess that is what it takes!  Maybe Larry has started another movement ... to get Native people back up and fight this abuse.  I'm passing on the bulletin.

Blessings,

I can now say I "Used" to be a Larry fan. He blew it. To answer why wasn't it made into a big thing. Unfortunately, there are more African Americans, and it is easier to tick of a smaller group than a huge population. It is also easier, to hope, for Native Americans to go away. That is what alot of people think, but these are also the same idiots who have no problem, claiming to be Native American. Shame on Larry the Cable Guy. I have no problem posting Boycott Larry.

I will add one more comment to this issue. Without your bulletin I would not have known what this 'man' said on Leno. Mvto. I will write to both the unfunny cable guy and to Leno to speak out on my distaste of this type 'humor'.
Many years ago when I was taking a required sociology course I realized that almost never were Native Americans included and/or counted in sociological studies. That is of course unless the study was on Native Americans. It seems everyone gets counted in the bean count but us. Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, ect.
The other night the TV was on, but I wasn't really watching it. In the background of the TV 'noise' was an interview with this "Larry the Cable Guy" giving his views on too much political correctness now. I really didn't pay attention to what the guy said, I just saw one more red-neck white guy running his mouth about how our American society has become too politically correct. I guess that's easy when you're white.

This shit really pisses me off to no end and have emailed Larry who happens to live not far from me. this is what I emailed him.

Squaw Talk

I feel very strongly about this particular word Squaw you used on the Jay Leno show and was wondering if your old lady would like to be called a "CUNT" yes a "CUNT" that is how this word is interpreted to us Natives, so let this be a lesson in the ways of NATIVE PEOPLE, and yes we are actual citizens of the USA and I will remember that IGNORANCE is just a plate of BULLSHIT. Maybe you can do one thing that the government has failed to do and that is to APOLOGIZE for their actions. See you at the Orlando fairgrounds for your first Powwow I dare ya to be there the fist weekend of November , 2007 that is.

I don't know how I missed your post about this. Maybe while I was ill, but better late than never. I can not add much that has not already been said so I'll cut to the chase. I too will write and strongly complain. At least he might realise this wont just go away. Thank you for the post brother...Lee

maybe its more about who you insult look at imus there was imediate rage but to be honest ppl insult natives all the time and no one comments we are forgotton. i remember the first time i was called a squaw and spit on i cried by the third time i punched the offender by the 10th i started praying for these ignorant jerks. it hasnt cooled my anger but my anger solved nothing one could write to leno or to larry the cable guy but it might not change anything. there will allways be ignorant racists i wish i had the answers but i dont .i guess the best advice is as long as we do not join these idiots theres one less and maybe some day there wont be any we can allways pray

i was very offended when i read this blog and i am not even a woman i e-mailed larry the cable guy and told him so here is a copy of what i wrote.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> just wanted to ask you if you research the terminology you use before you go out and blurt it out in your stand-up/interviews,television appearances? i recently saw an appearance you did on the leno show in which you used the word "squaw shank"if you had done some research you would have known that the term squaw is offensive to native american women its the same as calling them a cunt or whore i would surely hope you would not use the "n" word when referring to african americans so why then is it o.k. to use a racial slur against native americans. i would surely hope that in the future you will not use racial slurs against anyone either on purpose/accident,or just out of plain ignorance.>>>>>thank you for you time mark
