Wired magazine reports that the U.S. army is implementing new regulations (Army Regulation 530-1 OPSEC) that require all email and blogs to be cleared by a superior officer. This regulation is also being used to muzzle contractors. Read more here:

What's going on here? Why is the Army clamping down after years of blogging? Is this a consequence of growing dissent within the ranks of the Army? How much of this is about genuine operational security concerns? If you have any insight on this, speak out, tell your story.

again another clueless rambling from more idiots who love to use the rights that veterns like myself have put it on the line to get. my family and 4 other familys of soldiers in my unit were harassed and persicuted by assholes that got information from our unit military site. blogs and other information was passed on this site and some knuckleheaded soldiers thought it wouldnt hurt to put stuff out and "they " got ahold of it and got to our familys trying to get more info on movements and strength. nice work. that is 1 reaqson why security got clamped. stop bitchin about shit and support the troops, hell i dont even agree with us bein thier but or even like da bush but stop bein a jackoff against our troops.

Well, thanks for responding. You could have spared me the insults. If you're truly investing your life to defend the civic culture that defines American freedom, you might grant me the benefit of the doubt. I'm neither clueless nor a manipulator callously seeking personal advantage. I'm just a concerned citizen, using the tools of freedom to help people talk to each other about this war and its consequences for citizens and soldiers.

1. What I asked was, "What's going on here?" That wasn't a rhetorical question. I was interested to hear reactions to this policy, not in scoring political points. This is a significant issue concerning the first amendment rights of soldiers. It is complicated, and so, it deserves thoughtful and serious discussion.

2. Regarding your comment: If people are trying to build a movement to end the war by harassing families, that's just bad strategy. We wouldn't support it. What we would support is giving voice to the dissent you yourself voice above, and directing that protest at the politicians, special interests, and Pentagon operatives using the war for their own advantage.

Best,
S.C.
