Ariwa on Obama!!

November 6th 2008 I am on flight AA66 American Airlines just arrived in London from Dallas / Hawaii. "Welcome to London!" Greeted the air stewardess, "I am please to tell you that we have a new president of the United States, Barrack Obama"!

It's hard to describe the feeling that engulfed my soul. Having spent the past 10 days on the East Coast of America, and the past week in Hawaii, I had read the signs. Though knowing Americans, I wasn't convinced that I was reading the correct signs. After all, this is a nation of people that has 2 faces, a public and a private face. The two white youths that picked me up in Buffalo were singing loud and proud Obama.

In Hawaii, where Obama spent much of his childhood, old shopkeepers, taxi drivers, were all quite open about who they were voting in.

The sad truth is that America's history of segregation and racial intolerance of the African descendants continued to have a negative effect on black people up to this day. Even beyond America, countries like Italy and Spain, continues to treat black people as if we are a species of lesser value!

To me, the greatest aspect of Obama's success is the fact that he is clearly out of the Marcus Garvey school of thought that recommended in the early 20th century. Rules that were not taken very serious by many of Garveys' rivals.

It's only when we consider that Obama did not even compromise in the changing of his name, a move that many a black "revolutionary" made to make things easier for the system.

Can you imagine the teasing he would have got going to school in the US, the UK or even in the Caribbean!

We must all use this historical moment as an example, and a reminder that we are who we are. If the system don't like it, they will have to get use to it!

Thanxx 4 sharing your sentiments on this, Profff.

I have to admit I take a slightly more revolutionary stance, even though in my heart I too am happy he won, for many reasons.

The thing is, I think it is a horrible shame to the entire World that this should still be the issue it is! I could elaborate more, but it might be simpler to just refer you to MY bloggg...

Still love you to bitsss though... Just a friendly case of slight disagreement...

for bloggg...

As a white boy from a deeply racist family,I have had to outgrow my roots and make a change within my self that i believe will benefit me my children and the rest of the world. I am glad that America has chosen to make this change too, and like me,to the betterment of the rest of the world, we will eventually see whether Mr Obama will make a great president, and i hope he will be judged by the quality of his decisions and not by the fact that he was the first black president of USA. The day after the elections I woke up feeling the world for whatever reason a safer place, Is it?? Well for some of us maybe and others in war zones and conflict zones maybe not. Often it si mentioned that to be the president of the united states makes you the most powerful man in the free world?? Power is within us all, and what do we mean by the free world? Everybody within the world should be free. And, is a system of democracy that is only 300 or so years old any more free than a tribal system of government that has been around for many thousands of years?A system that we in the western world have tried to suppress at the cost of many thousands if not millions of lives?
Barrack Obama is not my leader I am, but i do hope for the sake of America that the change will spark a more fundamental understanding of self ,and self worth, for the coming generations of people who are willing to be lead, and eventually lead in kind.

Let's see the shift in conciousness because it's not just black America that needs it, we need to believe that America can be great again, because we can.

much love proffessor
hugs

Respect Professor, that's it. My first thinking was that my son could be later also a President, it's a old way which is now ready for the walk. Me also sweat when America start their vote, cause me was afraid that them follow again their old behavour. Yes, me hope that the whole world learn something now. Yes Professor, they will have to get use to it! Hug from Fanta.

Dear Prof, You are an ambassador of reggae dub, and major advocate of the progress of the black man, I would just like to bring to your attention that ... It would only be a matter of time before all the music you and your predecessors have pioneered would fully penetrate the conscious mind of the listeners and fans. It starts first with the movement of the soul, then the booty, and before not too people are thinking differently and acting differently. So please keep on doing what you're doing. Because who Jah bless no man can curse. This is our time to learn to love ourselves again. Enjoy!
