...works like this. It involves us standing around for hours at a time in dark rooms with our lamp Peter (typically our drummer's basement) with our instruments in hand accompanied by frustration and our odd senses of humor.
We find the wierdest things funny, and the funniest things not. Sometimes we laugh at the fact that nothing makes sense. Sometimes we get mad that we have been trying to write the same verse better for days on end. Josh and i disagree how well the chords we write don't mesh and usually ends in one of us not talking for hours on end and then collaberating on high fives when we see a girl topless in a movie (sorry Julie and Ashley). Eric gets down on himself and talks about how great he think the old bassist of Saves the Day is (Eben). Cadillac usually throws stuff at me from me telling him to start a song in 3/4 with a 4 count cadence. Then at some point we eat food and realize why we have such an amazing time being in a band with each other. Between the jobs and not having jobs and school and not having school we write and have been writing for this new Ep. I think like most times we write new material we are deathly afraid everyone is going to hate it. But i suppose that goes for everything we do. Which is why its so nice when people tend to like it more often than not.
Its times like these we realize that life isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. I mean being poor is a very overrated experience. And being able to say that "I am a starving musician." isn't as cool as it might be to say, "I play in Cartel and we write pop songs accompanied by our cookie cutter looks which equals in us getting paid son!" But i mean we would still rather the former than the latter.
Our new stuff is like...hmmm. Well its like more melodic in a way. Its prettier. The vocals have gotten more refined and the melodies are more sing - a - longy at times. I think i've been listening to too much Al Green. I can't really say much about the music other than you just have to hear it. Its nice though, and its different. We were orginally going to do a 6 song ep with three re - recorded old songs and three new songs. But now it looks like two old songs and four new songs. We keep trying to write a song and then ending up writing multiple parts for more than one. But, like i said. We are deathly afraid of what people will think. Then again at the same time...maybe that's a good thing.
I have been writing this for way too long. Maybe i should sleep more. Maybe Brandon should sleep more. I swear he sleeps less than me. I'll write him a message at 4am and he will answer it by 9. But at least he's punctual. One day we're going to be on MTV cribs. Mark my words.
Dear Brandon Davis,
thank you for being the most punctual person on the planet earth currently.
Sincerely,
Kayoum
