Tied to a lifeline a hundred and thirteen feet long, you feared some things would go wrong. So, you stayed away shuffling cards for picquet and just waited for me to come home.

Sweet Bess, my sweet Bess, thoughts of you all of the while I stood atop the Belle Isle. The press gathering, all eyes were on me, but my thoughts remained on your smile.

It was half planned as they shackled my hands I thought, "god, how'd I find myself so in demand"? While your blood and your history gasped in suspense, I just hung in the balance as they lowered me in from the bridge.

The cold found its way beneath my robes. It stopped my blood. It snapped my bones. My feet went numb against the stones.  The voice over the megaphone said,  "Down! Lower him down! Lower him Down!"

I did as I said I would. I just opened my mouth and the crowds came out to witness this foolish man take his last breath and leap to his death.

I berated myself as I crashed through the ice. As was my way, I never think twice. If very soon you should find yourself alone all that I ask is remember the code.

Remember the code.

All but this:

It was half planned as they shackled my hands I thought, "god, how'd I find myself so in demand"? While your blood and your history gasped in suspense, I just hung in the balance as they lowered me in from the bridge.
