From A Distance.

I was 17 or 18 years old and as usual for me on a Friday morning.I was in the basement of the Apollo Theater to watch rehearsal for the new show coming in for the week. There are no words for that tingling feeling but we all know when we are in the presence of someone special. That's how it felt when 9 year old Michael Jackson walked into the room. His oversize apple-jack hat only added to the image of the Man-child. As little as he was there was no doubt in any ones mind that he was a giant talent. We never again were in the same room.but from a distance there was always interaction.
In 1984 I got a call from my old friend Jerry Greenberg at Atlantic Records. He asked if I would be interested in recording a Michael Jackson medley  It was pretty clear Michael had a chance of winning a few Grammy Awards that year..I recently saw the 12 inch on Ebay selling for 165 Dollars.I guess tomorrow the price may double of triple.

Over the years I watched two young producers, Teddy Reilly and later R. Kelly, who both pasted through my life growup and get a shot at working with Michael. In a way I am sad that I will now never have that opportunity. I guess it should give me some satisfaction that I had some influence from a distance, .

   May he rest in peace.

When I was little he sang of the joy I felt in my heart.
When I got older he sang to me of emotions I didn't understand.
I'd stare into his sad, sad eyes and echo every syllable.
He sang into my ear and made me cry.
He sang into my heart and made me love him, and I have never stopped.
There was a brilliance about this man that dazzled the eyes, the heart, the emotion.
I felt close to him, he was older but I felt he was my age and when now I am older oddly he became my younger brother.  Brilliant but unwise in the world.
No one can hurt you now - soar like the eagle Micheal laugh and be free.  Some day that will be me.

WOW!...as I think back to my dayz hang'n with "The  Sylvers"...tha memories of watching the Jacksons show up at some the Sylvers local gigs.
One gig in particular was an amusement park here in Los Angeles..."Magic Mountain".

Whenever the Sylvers performed as headliners, they got a chance to perform an entire set...this time they incorporated some songs from the musical smash..."The WIZ". The Sylvers were known for their harmony & sharp choreography. That's one of the main reasons the Jackson's were always at the shows. Tryna get 'dem dance moves! LOL Marlon was always right in the wings...studying/watching with the eyes of a hawk{Especially since, he was the group's choreographer}.

Fast forward...years later me & Leon Sylvers were together the day that the video: "THRILLER" first aired. When it got ta' that hook...tha' moves that MJ & cast went into...came right back to the both of us! Dang, that's what we were doing when we performed our arrangement of "EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD". All we could do, was laugh hard & shake our heads. Over the years we both wondered when any of those old steps would show up or when they'd show up at any of the Jackson's gigs.
But seeing MJ perform them, Leon felt it was tha highest form of flattery.

It also showed us both an insight into MJ's mind. He never wasted anything he learned. He always found great use in whatever he learned, And just as powerful...his timing was always impeccable!
He didn't use any of those dance steps, until he absolutely had a great place for 'em!
So I guess in some small way as well...The Sylvers influenced MJ too!

Thank U Patrick for sharing Ur story with us as well!

Peace & Blessings!
