No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength.

the Cabin Sessions '08
It was like being a kid again. Except this time we had real guns. If any of you have seen the movie "Red Dawn" then you know exactly what I'm talking about. There were just four of us ready to conquer the wilderness, and just to make sure we'd win we brought enough ammunition to defeat the whole Chinese army. The purpose of our trip was to write some new songs while having fun out in the wilderness. There was no television, phone signal, computer or any other media access. I think it was the first time in my life that I was actually out of contact and it was one of the greatest feelings I have ever had. Our cabin was located on a retreat called Rainbow Springs. The retreat is set far back in the Appalachian Mountains. There are no roads within 3 miles of the cabin so we spent the last part of the trip backpacking through the wilderness. The trip lasted three days with each one bringing new adventure. Our first day was spent cleaning our rifles, sharpening our knives, walking the property and drinking whiskey. John Wayne would have been proud. On the 2nd day Jesse got lost. After he'd been gone for 8 hours or so me, Ryan, and Josh decided to look for him. We had an idea of the direction he had gone and after a 6 mile hike following deer tracks we found him meditating next to a stream. He claims he saw heaven open up, but I think he's full of crap. We spent the rest of the night writing songs around the fire. There's something innately pure about writing songs around a fire. The cracks and pops become the beats and they drive the rhythm of the songs. Feet stomps, acoustics, and harmonicas accompany the beat. You'll understand on the next release. Thank you for reading.
