Metal Power fanzine (Mexico)

A CD capable of putting CAGE in the major leagues of metal.

Disagreement webzine (Luxembourg)

"Darker Than Black" has all an album needs to become a classic. The most impressing thing on this CD is that is makes you believe that the Nineties never existed. Seldom before I have heard a power metal band sounding so authentic and being devoted to Eighties metal in such a true way.

The Shred Zone webzine (United States)

"Darker Than Black" is a CD that can be listened to a million times without ever getting old.

Skratch magazine (United States)

CAGE is a San Diego-based power-metal quintet whose latest 13-track release is stuffed with metallic goodness from end to end. Everything you could imagine from an epic metal band is here, from the maniacal screams (by vocalist Sean Peck) to harmonious twin lead guitars to all of the glory and precision of a rhythm section which gallops like a Preakness pony. While it can be said that CAGE is merely another Maiden/Priest knockoff band, they add a touch of darkness at the right times to imply that there's a lot more than a classic-metal revival happening. Chances are that if you're a diehard metal fan, you'll really enjoy Cage's spiked and studded sonic assault.

Mandatory Metal webzine (United States)

An American band that is starting to take off due to their great ability to mix Traditional and Power Metal with some black/death Metal elements. Sometimes it sounds like vocalist Sean Peck is channelling King Diamond or Rob Halford! His ability to switch between clean and rough vocals is impressive. But don't get me wrong, this is mostly Power Metal and Cage are pushing the bounderies of Power Metal and their own sound. Truly awesome songs like “Kill The Devil” and “Wings of Destruction” will earn them many new fans. Every song on this album is good. This is a definite improvement over the last album ASTROLOGY, which was still a solid album. If you’re into Power, Melodic, Speed, or just straight-up kick ass Heavy Metal, you will like Cage.

Metalcore Fanzine (United States)

A fuckin excellent slab of prime heavy metal that is not to be missed. This reminds me of the 1st Halford sole disc and trust me this kills all. Awesome powerful vocals soar through the air and the music is just crushing track after track of real heavy metal all the way. My fist pumps high for Cage.

The Cutting Edge webzine (United States)

Our buddy Sean Peck and his angry band of smoldering fiends have delivered yet another slab of molten steel. Building strength upon strength, San Diego’s Cage roar from the grated sewers of hell to put their own tattoo on power metal. Perfecting their Iron Maiden meets Judas Priest meets Queensryche assault, the five-piece craft teeth-clenching, fist-pounding, rapid-fire aggression with searing intensity. And served up with gorgeous artwork by famed illustrator Marc Sasso (Dio).

Originally formed in 1992, the band has been plagued by misfortune and setbacks. Their debut was recorded in 1995 but was not released until 1999. Their second effort Astrology (2000) received rave reviews and won them a sea of fans as they preached the devil’s music from the festival stages across Europe. However, it is within the plastic encasing of “Darker Than Black” that we hear real maturity and with world-class execution. Check out “Blood Of The Innocent” with its Native American intro as well as the galloping baseline of “Eyes Of Obsidian” and its twin guitar fury.

Cage is one of those fascinating band where they sound just as comfortable doing their best death metal impression (Chupacabra, White Magic), to Maiden (Door To The Unknown) and Halford (Secret Of Fatima). The epic “Wings Of Destruction” actually embraced elements of European Prog counterparts Hammerfall, Gamma Ray and Helloween. Peck is also coming into his own as a storywriter as heard in “Philadelphia Experiment.” The duel-guitar of Dave Garcia and Anthony McGinnis as well as the thunder of bassist Mike Giordano and drummer Mikey Niel are mind numbing.

BallBuster Music webzine (United States)

I bought this band's last album, so I knew what to expect... or so I thought. Cage is getting better and better with every release, the same way ASKA progressed. They have found their identity and polished it up for all to hear. I suppose the closest comparison I could make would be Maiden or Priest, but without all the sing-along choruses. The highlight of the disc was the Spanish sung hidden track "Chupacabra" in which the black metal vocals are not nearly as predominant as the English version. 'Darker Than Black' is a disc for the truest traditionalist headbangers.

Blistering webzine (United States)

The old saying that things happen in threes definitely applies to San Diego five piece power/ traditional heavy act Cage.

Although having formed in 1992, lengthy delays and misfortune meant that their debut album (With the rather appropriate name because the recording dates back to 1995) Unveiled saw the light of day in 1999. While reviews were positive, it was 2000’s Astrology that really saw the band take off beyond their selective U.S. market. While both the previous albums showed some promise, Darker Than Black truly is a coming of age for the band.

After the spoken word introduction of the title track, the band finally kicks in with the riff heavy and memorable ‘Kill The Devil’. There’s a distinct Judas Priest feel to the track, particularly with vocalist Sean Peck’s wide range on offer.

The follow up track ‘Chupacabra’ introduces a new element to the band, with Peck trying out some distinctly black metal inspired vocal passage. While that might sound out for the bands sound, it actually works as a new variation within the bands sound.
The combined attack of guitarists Dave Garcia and Anthony McGinnis in ‘Blood Of The Innocent’ relies heavily on the trademark sound of Judas Priest, while the concept based ‘Philadelphia Experiment’ works well with the original storyline.

‘White Magic’ brings the heaviest use of black metal inspired vocals to the fore, but reigns supreme through the stunning high-level chorus. This is sure to be a favourite in front of the audiences for some time to come.

No power metal album is complete without an epic of some sorts, and ‘Wings Of Destruction’ belongs to this album. The melodic and catchy guitar riff hooks you in, and then there’s the over the top (Yet convincing) vocal delivery to seal the songs fate.

Cage seems to have captured (Not unlike Pharaoh earlier this year with ‘After The Fire’) what most European bands seem to lack. The songs, the cover artwork, combined with the stunning production (Handled by none other than Roy Z’s assistant Richard Carr) make this a certified winner to my ears.

Cage is old school metal without the cheese, and Darker Than Black is the perfect album for a gap long needed filling.

Just for the record: ZwareMetalen is not a German webzine, it's Dutch/Belgian (Thank God, haha!).

By the way, we have a new Cage-interview on our FP. Check it out!
