‘Zine Release Party & Fundraiser
Saturday, April 4
5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
FREE -- All Ages
We have been working SOOOOOO hard on this zine and it's going to be super-hella-OMG-rad-as-something-that's-real-real-rad. We have stories, games, tons of art, an advice column... and MORE! And we'll talk about all the awesome stuff we've been doing, like lobbying in salem and giving a workshop for the children's peace fair... we rock...
And to celebrate [[[and raise money for our exciting impending summer roadtrip to Chicago to go to a huge conference of other youth groups working on counter-recruitment and anti-militarism]]], we're throwing this HUGE blow-out party with a bunch of solid electronic musicians that are gonna play / spin a miles of fun beats for your listening and dancing pleasure. Bring all yr friends! It's gonna be awesome, and I do mean that you will be struck with awe and unable to do anything but smile and have a great time.
Featuring live music performances by:
Thavius Beck (Mush Records, LA)
Composer of mercurial soundtracks for uncertain times, Thavius Beck conjoins various strains of electronic music to arrive at a daringly ambitious sound. He has received recognition in The Wire, Spin, and Urb for his solo releases under the moniker Adlib, the Labwaste project with fellow LA artist Subtitle, his recent production for fellow Mush artist K-The-I???, his early work with Global Phlowtations, numerous guest appearances, and producing for and touring in support of and accompanying Saul Williams.

Cancer the Kid (PDX)
Cancer the Kid uses data on the biochemical effects of various sound, frequencies and rhythms to physically reproduce certain experiences. Film scores and popular music are sampled, electronic beats are generated and broken, to create precise neurological responses. Listeners completely and viscerally believe themselves to be laying on a Florida beach or watching a friend die in combat. There is a sound to the violent self-disassociation of the American psyche. Countless auditory fragments careen outward from a collective self we must run from, that we can not bear to hear. Cancer the Kid captures these disembodied sounds from the air and reintegrates them into us; no matter how violently we struggle against it, no matter how great the injury he must inflict.

Spamtron (PDX)
In a 21st-Century dystopia, an unlikely team of anti-heroes emerged. Unable to harness their own cybernetic audio powers, Spamtron unwillingly angered n00bs and haters everywhere. Hordes of sinister corporations and ninjas now oppose Spamtron. Are you prepared for a genre-defying blast of non-stop dance-floor-crushing action? This is Spamtron.
The GummykubKrew (PDX)
An impressive and adorable project featuring Mireaya Medina, aka Cheetah Finesse, her son and a few of his friends (ages 5-10). They rhyme, dance, and lay down some beats, by hand and on machines. The kids write lyrics about things like peace... and cheeseburgers!
DJ Grimrock (45th Parallel Universal Zulu)
45th Parallel Zulus is the Oregon chapter of Universal Zulu Nation,a grassroots
Hip-Hop community organization found by Afrika Bambaataa in 1973 South Bronx, New York. This chapter is one of many chapters worldwide dedicated to uplifting the youth and their communities through peace, love, unity, knowledge, wisdom, and overstanding while having fun.
This is all being organized by and for United Voices, a group of
inspired young people of color, young women, queer youth, and other
inspired youth that challenge the status quo system of racism, sexism,
homophobia, war, economic injustice, globalization, gentrification and
corporatism. We use our art, knowledge and passion to empower
ourselves and our communities by creating events, workshops and our own
media. United Voices is associated with Beats for Peace -- hip-hop
oriented events full of art, music and workshops that engender social
change through the elements of hip-hop culture. United Voices is part
of the American Friends Service Committee, the second oldest
humanitarian non-profit in the country, a Quaker organization that does
peace and social justice work across the world.
Proceeds from donations and a raffle will be used to help defray the cost of the
United Voices youth program’s participation in a summer Youth Summit in
Chicago. United Voices is a multi-media arts-in-activism youth program
funded by the American Friends Service Committee. This event is
sponsored by AFSC, United Voices/Beats for Peace, PDX Peace Coalition,
Recruiter Watch PDX, Mush Records, Zulu Nation-Oregon Chapter and 45th
Parallel. For information, call Mireaya at (503) 230-9427 or
