John Martyn
Some music you remember for a very long time because it was passed on to you by great people. An old friend of mine once handed me a John Martyn album and said I should really check him out... I respected this friends musical taste immensely. Songs like “May You Never,” “Solid Air,” and “Over The Hill,” have stuck with me ever since...
They seemed to pop up at all the parties I was going to at the time and they became a part of my history, a part of my human fabric.
Myself and Paddy Casey were singing together at a Dave Murphy session one night and John, hot on the heels of his own show joined us with his guitar. To say the least, drink had been taken by all, that night and the result wasn't the most musical of escapades... but I still had such a sense of honor being on stage with someone who's art I so admire. You can't beat that under any circumstances, you just can't.
When a legend like John Martyn dies a piece of you dies too... in the sense that, “That Time,” has faded into the past pretty definitively...
But more than that... much more than that, who's going to create that music now?
All the best, mark
