Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

-Lewis Allen

I ran upon an, entire sight, of the picture post cards they used to sell of hangings, like these. I have never been so ashamed of my ancestors in my life.

Appalling.

May God grant us the strength never to allow such pure idiocy to happen again.

just beguinning to uncover this kind of atrocity here in Australia, we've been so good at sweeping this kind of disgrace under the carpet & forgetting about it, but alot of things have recently surfaced.
W.S.Burroughs was right "Man Is A Bad Animal". An incredible image & an amazing song, thanks for this post, we must never forget this kind of disgusting behaviour, so it never happens again!

Check out the book by the same name. Author is Lillian Smith. I'm halfway through it, and while I currently don't care for the Tracy character, I might change my mind by the end of the book.

The way Nina Simone sang this always had the power to make me cry. What a strange and savage creature is man, still.

Wow! I've never actually seen a photo like this.... Very disturbing indeed!
The above words were also recorded by Billie Holiday with the same name 'Starnge Fruit'. Very haunting.
