As the US tour had to be canceled through no fault of our own and the weather being a bit crap where I live I find myself now sitting around twiddling my thumbs wondering what to do with myself.

SO, I have been having a laugh with this Yahoo Answers thing and it's surprisingly addictive.

At first I was just throwing out the odd sarcastic response for a giggle but occasionally I find myself actually dealing with people's queries in a more helpful way. Check out some of my rants by following the link above - you should all know where I'm coming from by now so you shouldn't be TOO shocked by the old guff I come out with. There might be the odd surprise though.

There's all sorts of other users on there too.... some of them total wackos (not you of course - Tintin) so it can get quite entertaining.

I'd rather be out doing gigs in the States but I'm having to settle for Yahoo Answers at the minute.......

..

Actually, I'm not sure if the banner above DOES link to my questions and anwswers - can anybody give me a link that DOES?

Well, I won't lie: I wish you were here  doing gigs too.  I was going to 2 shows.

Hey.... didn't we used to have an "ask Cappy" forum?  We should bring it back.

My questions would be:

Would you ever consider doing an acoustic set?  I often wondered how many of your songs would sound with just you and your guitar.

gotta run, I just got called into work.  I'll be back later with more questions.

I can't get the links to open for some reason...I'll have to try again later as I'm quite curious to see how you've answered these questions.  Yahoo answers is definitely chock-full of "total wackos", but it's always good for a laugh if nothing else. ^_~

I will really be missing you guys come Monday, and on Hallowe'en as well.  Perhaps I'll have my own all-day Damned listening fest instead. ^_^
I'm crossing my fingers for another opportunity to see you perform, hopefully soon!

♥♥♥,
Elisabeth

Well, guess I'm happy to have caught you in Zaandam last month, Captain.  It certainly was a great
show, albeit a bit strange to hear punk rock played at 3:30 in the afternoon.  You are an excellent lead guitarist.  Hope you get the States sorted because I'd like to see you in California again soon.  (I saw you play the Blank Club, San Jose fairly recently.)  But as far as Holland:  Why did Dave Vanian lose the monocle?  I liked his look, almost a noir Mr. Drysdale or perhaps Mr. Moneybags from a Goth Monopoly Game.  Still think you yourself should revive the Mike Ratledge wigs,  wot?

Warm regards,  Matt

Your Japanese restaurant question is something I can relate to.

I remember years ago when Japanese restaurants and sushi started to become a lot popular in the United States. It's when I developed a fondness for the cuisine and it's distinctiveness.  Japanese cuisine isn't just about following simple recipes. There is a very strong Japanese food culture that goes back hundreds of years. All the restaurants back then were Japanese owned, and run by people who grew up in the Japanese food culture, which is something passed on from generation to generation.

In recent years, especially since my move to California, I have been finding more and more Japanese/sushi restaurants where nothing tastes right. The fish tastes substandard, the sushi rice isn't prepared correctly, and the non-sushi entrées are sometimes partially inedible. There are sushi places with gimmicks like "50% of all rolls all the time!" (which translates to, "our sushi is so crap, and made from such cheap ingredients; we really should be listing them in the menu for half the price of what a decent sushi restaurant should charge, but instead we can trick people into thinking they're getting a great deal!")  And most people don't suspect anything, because most people aren't really familiar with how good Japanese cuisine should taste, and the servers and chefs look east Asian... But then I started looking at the business licenses etc. posted on the wall near the cash register, and I've usually discovered that the restaurant owner's name is Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc.  I'm sorry, but taking a few Japanese cuisine lessons at a cooking school and buying a few colorful Japanese cook books at a bookshop isn't the same as growing up within the Japanese food culture, being innately familiar with all the flavors of the cuisine, and knowing what is or isn't appropriate for preparing the dishes.

No, a person doesn't need to BE Japanese to make good Japanese food.  But one MUST be extremely familiar with the food culture in order to.  Japan has been an island nation for a a couple thousand years, under strictly enforced isolation for much of that time, and has developed a very singular food culture and traditional cuisine.  Sure, it has been influenced by other cuisines, but only in small amounts, not nearly to the level that European cuisines have been influenced by one another over the centuries due to European countries' geographical adjacency.

Here in Sacramento California, there are countless cheap "sushi" places and restaurants selling inferior imitations of Japanese cuisine.  But thankfully there are still a couple of good ones, and the best way to find a good one is to find out where Japanese people like to eat. Or go to a restaurant located next to other Japanese shops.

And my reference in that paragraph to "back then" refers to when Japanese restaurants became more popular in the U.S.A., not to the previous sentence that mentions "hundreds of years"   I need to hire an editor!

That should say "a lot more popular" in my first paragraph but somehow the "more" got deleted
