I'm sitting here tonight in an empty coffee shop in Tampa Florida, wondering about the future of independent music and the musicians who try so hard to keep it rolling. It's true that some people are blessed with the type of talent that when you hear it, you immediately are sucked in. But even those people had to trudge along in the trenches for a while before they found their true voice.

What I'm getting at is... tonight I played a show for about 4 people. I'm in this super cool space called Sacred Grounds Coffee House. I've played shows for 1 person before, and I've been lucky enough to perform in front of thousands... and so I'm used to both sides of it. It's not me feeling sorry for myself that makes me write this either.

What I'm trying to say is: I was talking to the owner of the coffee shop tonight, getting to know her, and she said that business has been so slow lately that she may have to shut down. In a world with starbucks and mcdonald's, it's impossible for her to stay afloat without the support of the community around her. Yet, the community around her has been somewhat unsupportive.

So, here's my unsolicited advice for the evening :-). go find a cool local place that hosts indie music. Stop by at least once a week and purchase something. Even if the music sucks on one night, know that by supporting the business you will be cultivating a place where every now and then, you might be lucky enough to catch one of those incredibly talented musicians who've been in the trenches for years, and you may find a reason to support something you've never heard on the radio or the tv... because you believe it belongs there, even if it never gets there. You will in turn reward the peeps who are providing this invaluable service to indie music, and to us, the community.

Martin Sexton is one of those people. You've probably never heard of him via mainstream, but go to a show, and see what he has created by captivating people... us, in the many indie venues around the country.

Thanks for listening to my rant :-)

Cheers, and much love from Tampa.
Isaac

You know Isaac I'll bet the Sacred Grounds Coffee House has much better coffee than Starbucks too!! Hey sometimes I wish that all electronic devices would crash and people would be forced to have a look around and find something better to do with their time like listen to live music. We are starved of live music here in Bermuda and there are some people who would beg to differ but "we are" so every opportunity I get I'm trying to take advantage of "live".

Just read this and wanted to let you know I was just in NY for a fashion event and I took advantage of the fact that Danielia Cotton was playing Sullivan Hall promoting her new cd and low and behold there was your poster in the window so I thought that was very cool and just letting you know that it is a very cool venue "nothing like a coffee house" but very New Yorkie...so I hope that will iift your spirits a little and perhaps remember that it takes time to grown a garden and that you planted four seeds tonight!! By the time you finish your tour your garden will be well on its way!

cheers
Dawn

That's good. I do love my local coffee shops and what not. As well as Indie music. Far better than Starbucks, on all accounts.

There are many things to say about playing music for a crowd. And I don't know them all, but the one I do know is that no matter weither its 2 kids looking up it you with big eyes in wonder of how in the world you can make that beautiful sound, or a 1000 screaming drunk people dancing there butts off, its all about happiness. For me with my limited amount of stage time (2 twice) both in chruches, it scared the hell of me, no pun intended. If you have ever read anything I have wrote you know my strong points are not spelling.

Isaac, love the tunes, keep playing even if your the only one listening. If you play they will come and listen soon enough.

Much love, my friend,

Steve

Queen of corporate boycott here! If your here looking for me next time your in town forget searching Starbucks or WalMart for that matter. I'll travel miles out of my way to find the local grind.

At least it was 4 people in a WARM local coffee shop. Trust that those 4 people are out telling 4 of their friends about this guy Isaac that they heard the other night and how rad him and his music is. I know i'm spreading the word.

Safe journey's my friend.

I remember when you played for a room with a few people a few years ago here in AZ. One thing I have to say is I didn't notice how many people were there, etc.
Sareena and I were too busy loving you!

Yes. I will take your advice and continue to do whatever I can to support my love for artists. Starbucks happens to serve my most favorite beverages of all, but I'm sure I can find better somewhere else.
