MyCup o’ Joe

WEEK 11 March 20, 2009

MyCup o' Joe is the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Every Friday, Joe will sit down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! Joe will be answering YOUR questions every week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page!

JM: You following the World Baseball Classic at all?

JQ: I’m watching on-and-off. There are a few games that have been interesting. The USA v. Puerto Rico game was amazing especially considering the spanking the Puerto0 Rican team gave the USA just a few days prior. The truth of the matter is that it doesn’t get really exciting until you get down to the final four.

I think [Marvel writer] Frank Tieri said it best when he said, “The World Baseball Classic is specifically designed to embarrass America.” But…hey, we did worse three years ago. We’re in the finals round this time.

JM: Yeah, good thing for me.
I’ll be at Dodger Stadium doing the game coverage for Baseball America and BaseballAmerica.com.
So that’ll make it a little more interesting.

JQ: You’re shameless with the plug, aren’t you?

JM: Like you’re not? Speaking of which, you let one slip last week you weren’t supposed to, the fact that Andy Diggle will soon be writing Daredevil.
What’s the where and when? When’s he start?

JQ: Yeah, I gotta ’fess up to that one. That one was my bad. That’s what happens when I have a lot of plates spinning around. I thought for whatever reason that we had already announced itthat one, but I guess we hadn’t--. Andy starts this fall with a renumbered Daredevil #501. But man, I can’t get away from this without complimenting [outgoing writer] Ed Brubaker.
Ed did just an amazing, amazing run, following up after Brian Bendis, which was no easy feat. I mean, Ed’s run has been legendary, but he just needed to cycle off. I think he’s had a workload that just felt like “one book too many,” and he’s told all the Daredevil stories he feels he needs to for right now. Andy’s been sitting there in the wings, and he really wanted to do the book, so we made him the offerWe went to Andy with the idea of perhaps him taking over after Ed and we were thrilled when he said it was his dream project! That’s the kind of stuff you love to hear from a creator.

And I should give you guys a sneak peak at the cover to Daredevil #500 by Marko Djurdjevic.
Pretty awesome, eh?

JM: What makes Diggle the guy? Why’s he the choice?

JQ: Well, I think Andy really showed us something when he took over Thunderbolts.
He has a certain feel, a certain “bite” to his stories, and he just writes tremendous, tremendous villains.
He writes mean characters! [laughs] And there’s something there that resonated with all of us in editorial, where we just thought he could write the piss out of Daredevil.

JM: Andy Diggle is one of your exclusive guys as well, now.
What makes you offer an exclusive contract to a certain guy? Is there usually a trigger?

JQ: Did we just leak something right now? Did we make a public announcement about that? Darn it, if it’s not me it’s youI dunno.

But Andy’s just one of those guys, a tremendous talent whose work we’ve been reading over the years, and he comes with a good recommendation. I remember Garth Ennis telling me years ago, “Watch out for this guy. He’s great. You’ll be hearing a lot more from him.” The last guy I remember Garth saying that about was Warren Ellis, maybe about 15 years ago, many, many years ago. Garth has a really great eye for talent. So we’ve been talking to Andy, and I know we had some discussions right about the time he was weighing some options, seeing what he wanted to do, and he knew he had some DC stuff he wanted to do at the timeI thin he felt DC was a better fit for him at the time. So we said, “Fine, we’ll revisit another time.” , as these things go, he went to DC but we knew we were going to be revisiting the idea a few years down the road. And here we are, wWe’ve got him now, and I think he’s better than ever, a better writer than he was even then.

JM: Does the publication history of Daredevil ever mind-boggle you? It was bimonthly and damn near canceled before Frank Miller rejuvenated it in the 1980s, and later, it was almost scrapheaped again before it became one of the Marvel Knights launch books. Now it’s consistently a top-seller.

JQ: Well…when I think about it, I think Daredevil has had one of the greatest long-term literary histories of any comic.
You can easily point to a Watchmen, a Dark Knight Returns or whatever and argue that’s betterthat those are the hallmark stories in comics, and I wouldn’t dispute you.
But I think pound for pound, over the long haul, there have probably been more great stories written in Daredevil than any other Marvel comic. Maybe in anyone’s comic.
I mean…there’s a long series of classic stories about this one character! It seems to attract great writers. It seems to attract great artists—ahem, ahem!, as I compliment myself! But there’s just something about the character. I think maybe he’s ourt most Shakespearean character.

And that’s…odd. ’Cause yeah, the character’s history is very spotty in a sales sense.
But you’ve had writers from Stan Lee of course, to Frank Miller to Ann Nocenti—and incidentally, I think Ann’s run is tremendous, it’s maybe just not as well-recognized ’cause she followed Frank—to Kevin Smith, David Mack, Bob Gale, Brian Bendis, Ed Brubaker, and now Andy. I’m sure I’m missing some greats in there as well, but it’s pretty much a murderer’s row of writers.

And Ed will still be around on other books. Like I said, he’s had a very heavy workload, and while I don’t think you’ll see him picking up a new monthly title right away, he will be doing some special projects coming up that will be very important to the Marvel Universe as a whole.

JM: Speaking of the rest of the Marvel U., we’re decidedly in the “Dark Reign” period.
How long will this last? And do you have a date circled on the calendar for next crossover thingee and next iteration of the Marvel Universe?

JQ: “Dark Reign” will take us right about to the end of this year. After that, we’ll be stepping back and kind of taking a breath. We have no immediate events planned after that, at least in the Avengers’ corner of the universe.
You may see a few smaller, “Planet Hulk”-sized events, but nothing quite as sweeping as a Civil War or Secret Invasion for a little while. And those will be happening in other parts of the Marvel U. And speaking of Andy Diggle again, Andy will be playing a very, very large part in onesome of these “Planet Hulk”-sized events. At least one of them.

JM: Now I know last we spoke, you mentioned you wanted to touch the economy these days and comic creators.

Well, the economy is affecting everyone.

It’s hard, to give specifics with respect to comics because we’re doing okay now, but we don’t know where we’re gonna be six months from now, or where the industry will be six months from now.. We’ve been doing well, but there’s always a little fear of what might be around that next corner. And let me stress that’s not just in comics—that’s every industry.

One thing that I definitely do sense is a little trepidation from the comic creative community because of the uncertainty. We’ve been getting some calls asking, “Will I be getting freelance work in six months?” Right now, I don’t see any need for panic, I don’t think it’s nearly as bad in comics as it is elsewhere—again, we’ve been doing pretty well. Sure, everyone has been tightening their belts, but we’ve always run a very tight ship here at Marvel. But, because of the uncertainty, I do see a lot do see people knocking on our doors who haven’t knocked for a long time. Some have been out of the game for some time, and others, well, lets just say that it should serve as a cautionary tale for young creators. And…I’ll just offer this up as a cautionary tale to creators everywhere, because for me, the one place you don’t want to find yourself is in a bad position with bad memories of a breakup when you do come knocking. Now, I understand it happens. It happens that talent might get angry with a certain company if they feel they weren’t well-served while there. It happens from time to time. But as creators, we have to be careful. I see so many creators who get online as soon as they’re out the door with a company and start to bash that company publicly. Heck, I’ve seen it happen with employees. They’ll talk trash, they’ll tell stories out of school, or they’ll give that old speech about “I’ll never work there again!” But they might find themselves, at some point down the line, knocking on the door of that company again. And I’ve had had that experience several times in my career and especially in the last few weeks, with creators who really seemed to do everything the could to burn bridges at Marvel now coming back around and looking for work.. And I gotta tell you, we’re receptive to everyone and we don’t have a blacklist at Marvel, but it does make me cringe a little bit when I see those people coming back and knocking on the door at Marvel as if nothing happened. You lose some respect for people when they go out talking trash and telling stories out of school, you lose all respect when they come back as if nothing had ever happened or without even apologizing for it.

So…cautionary tale, kids. Life is cyclical. Things come around to you and sometimes not the way you hope. I understand that there will be times when someone feels like they’ve gotten a raw deal, in some cases they may be right. If you have a gripe, speak to the people involved and keep it off the tubes. You just never know.

Just don’t burn any bridges. Not anywhere. And again, I get it if you feel you got a raw deal. Speak your peace, say what you have to say to the parties you think might have done your wrong, but do it professionally. Don’t burn bridges and trash someone publicly. There’s no wisdom in that.

JM: So personally speaking, what do you do in an instance like that, when you get that call?

JQ: Ah…I usually just let the editors know. “So-and-so is looking for work, if you’re interested. Feel free to give him or her a call.” Outside of that, I try to stay out of it. Sure, on occasions there are times when I have to bite my lip really hard, but as I said, there’s no black list here in publishing.

But if it’s someone I feel really went out of their way to throw me under a bus once, I’ll also tell them, “Feel free to use them, go with God. Just please understand that if they cross my path, I really don’t have anything to say to them.” It might seem odd, but it’s about the most civil way I’ve found to go about my work. And thankfully, that’s a rare, rare instance in which that happens. I certainly don’t want to begrudge anyone work, but I also think there are a few people who I’m better off working without.

JM: Thanks, sunshine.
Any other tips and tricks?

JQ: Yeah, actually [laughs]. If you check out my Twitter feed I did a lot of art information stuff a few months ago that was a lot of fun. And I was amazed. AS I was doing it, I think people were Twittering their friend. I think my followers went up by 500 in a couple hoursabout an hours worth of Tweets this week just talking comic storytelling theory. It was a lot of fun and a lot of people seemed really into it, maybe we’ll do some of that here.

JM: Aces.
Reader question time?

JQ: I think so.

William asks:

Why not 30 covers to every comic you publish? Marvel seems to think this is a good thing, and doesn't see it for what it is—shafting the majority of customers, making them settle for less than the best.

JQ: William, I’m not quite clear on what the accusation is. I would understand it if we were forcing you to buy every cover we did, but we don’t. Purchasing alternate covers is really the choice of the individual fan. Now while in the past I have said that I’m not a big fan of alternate covers myself, there is a large contingent of fandom that seems to dig them. That said, regardless of my own personal feelings, I don’t understand why you think having more than one cover on a title means that we are settling for less than the best, or precludes wonderful covers being on our books.

Sami asks:

I hear Christopher Yost and James Asmus are writing Runaways #10.
Is this a one-shot, or are they planning more?

JQ: This is just a one-shot. Chris is telling a Runaways/X-Men story and James is doing a GREAT “Truth or Dare” short story. The announcement of a permanent Runaways writer will be coming very soon and you won’t want to miss it.

Hometown Comics says:

Thanks to whoever at Marvel decided to give first crack at selling The Stand: Captain Trips hardcover to comic shops instead of the massive chain stores. In this economy, it isn't easy for us "mom-n-pop" shops when the big chains have so many advantages we don't. Kudos to whoever came up with that.

Please give Frank Cho an inker so he can keep on schedule and don't release his first issue until he has five issues completely penciled. Nothing makes a regular reader drop a series faster than lateness.

And a Strikeforce: Morituri paperback collection. Make it happen.

JQ: Hometown, any decisions concerning our collected editions and hardcovers fall into the very capable hands of our sales guru David Gabriel.
Go on, David, take a bow! YAY!

As for Frank, he’s very particular about his art and likes to do it all on his own. To be honest, I would be the same way with my own work, except for one small problem—I’m a terrible inker. Frank happens to be brilliant at both disciplines. Lateness in comics is an arguable point.
In many cases, it doesn’t cause fans to leave a title, especially when top-notch talent is what they’re waiting for. To prove this point, just look at how many late books with big names are constantly in the top 25 sellers. Still, this doesn’t mean you don’t have a valid point. We work very hard to keep our shipping on track and we’ve become a lot better at it over these last few years than in years past. However, comic books are still produced by human beings, and stuff will sometimes fall through the cracks. No excuses, we do our best—but inevitably, some things will happen, even to the best of us.

As to Strikeforce: Morituri, hit up David Gabriel as soon as he’s done taking bows!

Steve says:

I can't wait for X-Men Forever.
The ’90s were when I started reading comics, and that era will always be my favorite.
Will these stories be considered canon? Or will they exist in some pocket dimension or something? Not that I'm advocating character deaths, but if it is canon, we can pretty much expect that any X-Man alive today will not meet their maker in X-Men Forever.
To a lesser extent, the X-Men can never be in real peril if we know the outcome.
What can you tell us?

JQ: We're glad to hear you're excited, Steve, and the amount of interest we're getting from fans is so overwhelming we probably would have done this earlier save for the fact that we wouldn't have had the spectacular talent of artist Tom Grummett on board.
He was absolutely born to draw this book as these pages prove!

XMF's continuity is a unique beast. Marvel's never done anything like this before, where we're literally picking up from a storyline from 15 years ago and letting the creator go the path not traveled. By its very nature, it can't be considered cannon to the existing universe proper, and with that comes the promise that there will be things that no X-fan would ever see coming, including the unexpected death of a character writer Chris Claremont is closely connected with (PS. Not who you think).

Mighty Mutt asks:

I've read about the Hulk #600 issue due out this year.
Will there be any other original titles being changed back to original numbering? Say, Mighty Avengers?

JQ: Mighty, while you will see such titles as Daredevil and Captain America returning to their original numberings with #500 and #600 respectively, there aren’t any plans to turn back the Avengers numbering—mostly because we really see New Avengers as a successor title to Avengers, and not exactly a continuation at all.
And Mighty Avengers is only 22 issues old at this point.

Timo asks:

Is there a chance we can get a cosmic based X-Men book? You have a lot of X-Men with Cosmic-type powers.

JQ: Cosmic X-Men book? Never say never.
But, just for the sake of accuracy and splitting hairs, War of Kings features Havok and his X-Men who were last seen in X-Men: Kingbreaker.
So, can we call this an Cosmic X story, or should we call it CosmiX?

Russ asks:

If Timestorm 2009-2099 sells well, will we get a 2099 ongoing?

JQ: Russ, as with all new projects, the future of 2099 (“Future”…get it?) is in your hands.
If enough readers pick up Timestorm: 2009-2099, you can bet your shocking life that we’ll deliver additional adventures of Marvel’s sci-fi world. And once you see the crazy ideas that writer Brian Reed dreamed up, not to mention the art of Eric Battle, we think you’ll want more!Russ, as with all new projects, the future of 2099 (“Future”…get it?) is in your hands. If enough readers pick up Timestorm: 2009-2099, you can bet your shocking life that we’ll deliver additional adventures of Marvel’s sci-fi future.
And once you see the art of Eric Battle, we think you’ll want to see more!

HeyNothingYouCanSay asks:

I’m so excited to see Stryfe back in Messiah War.
Any other big X-Men villains coming back? Is Sabretooth really dead? And when will Gambit kick some ass?

JQ: Gambit is kicking ass currently in X-Men: Legacy.
But if you want more, there’s a one-shot about his origin coming out in June and more Gambit goodness in July.

As for Sabretooth—we cut his head off with a sword that counteracts his healing factor! How more dead can he be? But other big X-Villains? Yes. That’s right—YES. Somewhere in the next couple months, in one of the X-Books, one of the biggest will make his—or her—dramatic return. You heard it here first.

Neal asks:

What happened to the rest of Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas? If I am correct, only two issues came out.
Wasn’t this supposed to be a four-issue series?

JQ: It’s an old and very familiar story, Neal.
With the phenomenal reaction to the Iron Man film, Jon Favreau’s been up to his armpits with other assignments, and hasn’t been able to sit down with Adi Granov to hammer out the last two issues.
We’re hopeful that Jon will be able to get back onto this at some point down the road, but the honest truth is that we don’t expect it to happen any time soon (we’d rather he be focusing his attention on Iron Man 2, and we believe most of you would as well.) So all we can do is apologize for now, and hope you’ll be patient with us on this one.

Nerdcore asks:

Why the lack of love for the symbiotes? Venom's in the Dark Avengers, fair enough, but what about Anti-Venom and Carnage? And are you gonna leave Toxin in Marvel Purgatory?

JQ: If it's symbiotes you like, Nerdcore, then the next few months should be right up your alley! Not only will Venom be playing the role of Dark Spider-Man in Dark Avengers, but he'll also be headlining his own “Dark Reign” limited series: The Sinister Spider-Man.
Here's a sneak peek at the first cover! And both Anti-Venom and Carnage will be turning up again before the winter months. But Toxin? No immediate plans for that particular symbiote-spawn right this second.

Joe, how accurate can you say the ICv2 lists and numbers are...did Spider-Man 583 break all those records?......And we know Hulk and She-Hulk will be there but will the red hulk be showing up in Planet Skaar at all?

Hey Joe, this is The Dude Von Doom - the, according to Newsarama, "evident Doctor Doom superfan" that asked you about what the future is for the good doctor during last year's SDCC. (Thanks for keeping Dark Reign and Doctor Doom & the Masters of Evil a surprise for me!) History repeats itself as I again ask if Doom (and his writers) have big things in store for the Marvel U. With accomplices like Namor, Loki and even Dracula, it looks like Doom's Day is near.

Mr. Quesada........I've noticed that some of Marvel's comics contain a credit for "production." For example, Joe Sabino was credited with "production" in Uncanny X-Men #504.
Could you give me some idea of what exactly a comic "producer" does? Also, why do some comics feature "producers" while others don't?

Now that you've actually made the Avengers line of best sellers, why not take a challenge to make the Defenders a top ten book and team?........Heck, calling the "New Avengers" the Defenders eventually would do the trick instantly.........Also, this is kind of a silly question, but is there a reason the word "The" has been excised from several titles? IE, "Uncanny X-Men" or "Punisher." Missing it their cover logos look really kind of weird.

In the aftermath of Secret Invasion would it be silly that there is a Skrull playing a major role in the Marvel U?............If you ask me Norman Osborne knows information. Hey Joe, ....Kudos on the love you guys have been showing to the former cast of New X-Men. With cameos from Surge and Hellion in X-Force, I'm almost getting my fix. But still no love for Prodigy. I know he was depowered, but when his mind was unlocked he retained all the skills he learned/absorbed. Considering the people he's been around in his tenure at the Institute, that would still make him one of the most powerful people in the marvel u regardless if hes a mutant or not. Think of the fighting styles and combined knowledge he has in his head. I feel that it is a shame to waste this character, especially with Beast and his "X-Club" of super geniuses trying to save mutant kind.
What are your thoughts?

Hey Joe. This question goes back a few years but I've been rereading a lot of X-Men comics from post-M-Day and noticed that supposedly 90% of mutants were depowered leaving only about 198. Prior to that there were millions of mutants all over the world, so I was wondering what the story is with that discrepancy. ........Thanks a lot!........Evan

Thanks Joe - You mentioned that you might do some comic art/ storytelling tips and tricks in this column. As a non-Tweeting comic creator and Cup o Joe regular I wholeheartedly second this notion.........Por Ejemplo:....- Any techniques that you've recently adopted into your own comic work after seeing them employed by another creator?....- Who do you find to be an expert at page/panel layout either in solid sequential storytelling or at evolving the tools of the medium?

Hey Joe, I feel a bit concerned that cool minis from the last few years i.e Modok, Union Jack, Beyond, Loners etc have now being replaced with tie in minis that willlimit the scope of the writers imagination. I get these books didn't make big numbers but they seem to be more critically acclaimed than the glutton of tie ins. Would a Great Lakes Avengers or Alpha Flight mini really sell less than a Dark Reign Zodiac series. ......Also seeign Yost writing a DC book recently does that not make you want to tie up a fan favourite writer to an exclusive contract. So far Kyle and Yost are the best X-Books writers in your stable right now IMHO. Please don;t let them get away. ......On the subject of X-Books do you feel you have suceeded on bringing them bacl to the height of their popularity and if not what do you think if the key factor in that not happening. BTW I wont accept fans being fickle as an answer. As a life long X-Fan I actually can't bear to buy most of the X-books available right now bar X-Force and X-Factor. This feling seems to resonate amonsgst the fans online and the figures seem to back it up.......We seem to have yearly revamps that fall flat and do you feel thats down to the editorial whose job it is to supply fans with what they want to buy or do you feel the many fans who are trying to signal you guys in the right direction obviously have no idea of what they want. Do you feel it would be a little bit arrogant to ignore fans needs for years to fullfill your own tastes. If you are doing that , what makes you feel like you are fit to do your job.

Hi Joe! one thing that has been bugging me lately is the darn barcode on the front of all of the marvel and dc books. i was wondering if there is any action you could take to move the barcode to the back cover of the book or even to the inside cover on all of the books you publish. it just bothers me because the barcode takes up so much space and sometimes ruins a great cover by a terrific artist. its not fair to the artists that work on the cover and its not fair to the fans that buy the books. i understand that it's necessary to be there but perhaps a better place? Thanks!......

Speaking of issue numbers... Why the #^@$ do you relaunch titles of major characters every few years? That royally pisses me off. I have been collecting comics since the mid-70's and I can't count how many friggin relaunches you have had for the various characters and titles. Gee, which Punisher titles came in what order? How stupid! Gee, marketing says if we start at #1 we will increase sales. These gimmicks along with multiple cover options are enough to drive a die hard collector like me to quit altogether just to make a point and vote with my dollars. And sad to say, us long timers are your primary customer base. My comic shop owner tells me people my age and gender are over 90% of her business.....I don't expect to see a reply to my note.
It is not meant to be hostile, but it really cheeses me off!

in regards to the daredevil thing...i cannot sit here and say that brubakers daredevil run hasn't been good, but it also hasn't done much. daredevil is like the girlfriend you drunkdial because you know she's always good for it when the chips are down, but all the while what you're really searching for is something better. i think the daredevil core concept could benefit from a bit of radical retooling, as opposed to new writers showing up and doing theier versions of the miller stories.
everybodys got and elektra story, everybodys got a bullseye storie, and everybodys got a kingpin story, maybe its time for a new story?

Hey Joe, ...... I have been a Daredevil Reader since Issue 370 and I stopped in Vol2 #40s. If I added Daredevil back to my regular marvel lists would I be missing out on some stuff or be confused at all? ............Would it be too late to go back to Daredevil now?

Hey Joe, if the sales, of the Sorcerer Supreme arc in New Avengers, are high (and if Dr. Strange survives) do you believe that a Dr.
Strange ongoing could be coming in the future?

I want to ask this artist to artist, in lieu of obscenely late books that have plagued companies this decade do you think that american comic companies would benefit more by shifting (art) production to more closely resemble the way manga is produced with Several artists assisting the main artist of a book? ....Part of the impetus of asking is that it seems like there are a few 'Name' books with 'Name' creators from every company that come out of the gate and stumble and sometimes never get back on track. But those 'Big' books are surrounded by lesser books that may have a fraction of the audience worked on by very capable creators. ....It seems like it would be more financially beneficial to the company and the creators to have other artists help do labor on a book like, for example, the Ultimates to ensure it comes out monthly..... instead of yearly... which seems more financially sound than having artist 'X & Y' work on ,y'know , speedball and toxin mini-series. ....In the long run companies would get a lot more work out of the 'Name' creators.....Or maybe its one of those things that sounds great on paper but wouldn't fly in practical application? Or maybe I'm just completely off my rocker

Although having to wait for excellent continuations can be quite painful (Hulk vs. Wolverine #3 springs to mind), I think Marvel does a good job of making sure the quality level is up. A friend of mine purchased Final Crisis #6 because of the "Batman Dead" thingy, and when I glanced through it I found the art quite choppy and distracting. This was due to a multitude of artists working on the same issue. I found the same disturbing on New Avengers #50, but I understand this was to allow native character artists to work in the 'group' book (I might be wrong). I found it distracting then too.........My inconsequential vote would be to allow the artists the time to finish the project properly and then ship a quality product rather than just meet some arbitrary schedule. Less books means less sales, but a higher quality book means more repeat customerage - customering - custom - customereneering (?).

Wow Im sad to see Ed leave Daredevil because his run on it is just awesome, and no small feat following Bendis run which is legend as well as Ed's now. At least he's still on Cap! Great news you delivered Joe on comics and the Marvel universe.........I still would prefer Peter in the black costume of spider-man again, but it's so wrongly cool that you got venom faking himself as Peter in the Dark Avengers. I may not be getting that book because i feel that too many villains in the real world may run the show like this, but it is truly interesting take and direction of the Marvel universe.........The question I hope that comes is....will there be villains that after tasting the life of a hero or on the right side of the law that may want to stay on that side? Hmmmm I guess we'll find out in a year of so.........Hope to see you again at the SD. con this year. Take care.

JQ......I am 25 year retail shop owner and I just wanted to say.......That the economy the way it is and you caring about that as Marvel editor chief says alot about you.......I feel that since Marvel has been under your leadership. The creative and business end of Marvel has not been better since old Stan himself was in the top spot. The Marvel U is more interesting then it ever has been.......The future of this great market, I have been in since 1984, is going to depend on true people like yourself keeping it going.Business is tough right now but I see positive coming from this.In the toughest times comics keep selling and people love the characters they grew up with. There is a change coming in the future may it be all digital comics and a few trades coming out quartley. Comics will endure and Marvel will be here no matter what after we're a gone. The next generation of readers will be there and comics will exist in some shape or form........Thanks and good job Joe........Matt

Joe, is there any chance that some of this generation of mutants (i.e. Surge, Ernst, Wind Dancer) or even the Generation X generation will make appearances in New Mutants volume 3, or is it strictly old school? Also, 2009 is the twentieth anniversary of the creation of one beautiful Jubilation Lee. Are there any plans for her to be used, or even cameo, in an x-book before the year is over? She misses her friends a lot. She told me.

Hey, Joe. I've been lovin' on Daredevil since you and Kevin Smith relaunched him back in the day, and each progressive run has just gotten better and better.
I'm super excited about Andy Diggle taking over from Brubaker, but do we get any news about the art on the book? Michael Lark staying, or somebody new? Jock?

Hey Joe, with all of the success that the Cosmic branch of the Marvel Universe has been seeing with annihilation, conquest and war of kings, is there any chance that Marvel may consider putting all of its cosmic characters into a family such as The Avengers are, Spider-Man and the X-Men.
Also, if War of Kings is as successful as it seems it will be, is there any chance for an ongoing Starjammers book? The more cosmic books the better in my opinion!

Is it possible for Marvel to start releasing massive "Year in Covers" hardcovers with nothing but every cover of every Marvel book you guys published that year? I think this would make an amazing series of artbook volumes and you could even go back and do volumes from yesteryear for us art enthusiasts.

Hey Joe! I have always been an avengers guy and have been reading New/Mighty and now Dark Avengers religiously, following all the major events of the past few years that have shaped the Avengers and the Marvel Universe (House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion…). I have always wanted to get into the X-Men and their whole world, but with the amount of X titles out there, I don’t know where to start. Also, I’m stokes about the news of an X-Men/Dark Avengers cross over event, but I feel like my knowledge of the X-universe is not sufficient enough for me to fully enjoy the upcoming event. Could you help me out by telling me which books and stories I should catch up on in order to get the best reading experience out of the upcoming X-men/Dark Avengers event? Thanks.
PS: will there be any trade paperback releases of the Noir titles (X-men, Spiderman, etc)??
