MyCup o’ Joe

WEEK 16April 24, 2009

MyCup o' Joe is the weekly communiqué from Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada to the legion of Mighty Marvelites Assembled! Every Friday, Joe will sit down with journalist Jim McLauchlin to answer questions on the pressing issues of the day at Marvel and throughout comics.

And you get to chip in as well! Joe will be answering YOUR questions NEXT week! To get in on the fun, post your questions at the bottom of this page!

JM: So J. Jonah Jameson is mayor of New York. It’s nice to see another Irishman in office. For that, I thank you.

JQ: Wait. J. Jonah Jameson is Irish? I didn’t know that.

JM: With a name like “J. Jonah Jameson,” he has to be.
Think about it: Your favorite Irish whiskey is Jameson’s, right?

JQ: I thought that was your favorite Irish whiskey.

JM: My favorite is Irish whiskey is whatever’s in arm’s reach. But I will claim J.
Jonah for the Dubs!

JQ: Whatever you say.

JM: Well, regardless, question is: Is this something that was on the drawing board as soon as you started mapping out what was to happen in “Brand New Day,” or did it become part of the plan as you went along?

JQ: It wasn’t a Day One idea, but I’m pretty sure we did come up with that in the second Spider-Man retreat we had. It was very early on.
It was a little bit of a subject for debate, because one of our rules in the Marvel Universe it that it’s the real
world
, and that office is obviously not held by J. Jonah Jameson in the real world. But there were so many great and compelling reasons to have Jonah become the mayor, that we decided to go with it. And we really weren’t concerned with “Oh, let’s see his rise to political power and the campaign,” but we were well more concerned with all the fun we could have with “Wow. Just what he hell would this do to Peter Parker and Spider-Man?” Those particular points and story elements were just too compelling for us that we couldn’t not do it. That apple was just too juicy not to take a bite out of.

JM: It occurs to me that much is made about story planning and going with the hot iron in the fire as regards the TV show Lost.
That said, you guys have big honkin’ “summits” and make macro- plans for your books.
Do you have a general philosophy or rule of thumb when it comes to sticking with the plan versus abandoning ship in favor of what you hope is a better idea?

JQ: Generally speaking, we don’t change the plan. The “change for a better idea,” we hope, comes at these summits themselves. We’ll debate stuff for days sometimes to hopefully get it right. Rarely do we change gears after the summit is done. There are just too many other moving parts it could effect, and an entire editorial group and an entire group of writers and artists who have bought in to what the plan is. It just wouldn’t be prudent for us to change. So if there’s another idea to be had, we generally save it for the next summit and make it part of the next year’s publishing.

JM: Is there, though, a single “for instance”? Can you recall one idea that really clicked that you decided to run with that ran contrary to a previous macro- plan?

JQ: Not really. The one kinda of famous-slash-infamous change we did make, though, happened at one of the summits, and happened, I think, right at the end of the third day.
Again, we’ll go over this stuff for days sometimes, and the closest we came to making a big change was still at a summit when we came up with the idea for Civil War as our big summer crossover.
We were going to do “Planet Hulk” leading into World War Hulk.
That still happened, but when the idea for Civil War came up at the 11th hour, we realized that one was a better fit for the entire Marvel Universe.
World War Hulk is still a great story and I still love it, but one of the great sayings in the world of writing is that “Sometimes, you have to kill your little darlings.
World War Hulk was one of those darlings, and we just moved it a bit to the side so Civil War could be center stage.

JM: And we’re right around the corner from Amazing Spider-Man #600.
Any big honkin’ plans there?

JQ: Yeah. How about 100 pages, all original content? How about a Stan Lee story? We’ve got all sorts of great stuff in that book. We really look at Spider-Man kind of like our company mascot, and this will be a story worthy of being a great anniversary present to that company mascot.

JM: When you get Stan Lee involved with something these days, what’s it like for you? Is there the fanboy giddy when he sends in the script, or is it just like working with any other writer?

JQ: It’s always a joy working with Stan. You can’t help but feel his giddiness, his energy. As soon as he makes that first keystroke and you start getting the stuff, we all start getting excited.
You can’t help it—he’s Stan!

JM: Hey, looks like Gene “The Dean” Colan is drawing Captain America #601, which is pretty cool.
Now this is…what? The Captain America Annual you’ve had in the works for a while, yes?

JQ: Yeah. Now this story was always part of [writer] Ed Brubaker’s master plan, but it’s now winding up in a different issue.
One of the things we realized when we started getting Gene’s art was that it was just so absolutely stunning, that it deserved a better showcase in a sales and marketing sense.
And it’s just the structure of comics, the infrastructure of comic sales, that part of the regular series will sell better and have more eyeballs on it than an annual. We had the opportunity to put it into the actual run of Captain America, the issue right after #600, so we did. It’s also a nice opportunity to give a little tribute to Gene, and show folks how awesome his stuff is. On top of it all, we’re going to print the story twice in the issue. Once “regular,” and once black-and-white, just Gene’s pencils, so everyone can see just how amazing his work is.

JM: Y’know, it’s interesting. Gene Colan is one of those guys who never lost his fastball. When he does that grayscale pencil routine, it is amazing and beautiful to behold.

JQ: Yeah. Absolutely. The guy can still crank.

JM: If you look at yon Interwebs, which is always a notion with its own inherent upsides and downsides…

JQ: You mean the tubes? The tubes?!

JM: Sure. That series of vacuum tube.
It seems like a large amount of people just wanna hate on Marvel Divas.
Is this your perception as well? If so…why do you think? The title? The high concept? Anything?

JQ: Well, first of all, I’d take exception to “a large amount of people.” What’s a large amount of people? Two? Two million? I dunno.
But the bottom line is, there’s not a single thing we could talk about here that someone won’t hate on. And some people really like to find something, make it negative, and focus on it.

Marvel Divas…if it’s for you, great. If it’s not for you, okay, that’s fine as well. But I just don’t get how people want to hate on things without having read a stitch of it.. What have you read of it? What have you seen of it? If you want to hate it after the fact, fine. Hate on it. Maybe we didn’t give you a book you loved. That’ll happen. There are hits, there are misses. But if people want to hate something before they’ve read it, before they’ve seen anything of it… okay, knock yourself out.

JM: Do you ever just scratch your head and go, “I just don’t get it. I don’t get why people love to get so up in arms over something.
If you don’t dig it, don’t read it” as regards a Marvel Divas or similar?

JQ: No. I have been doing this now at Marvel for 10-plus years. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It might have a bit when I was a rookie, but now I realize it just comes with the territory. I could bang my head against a wall if I wanted, but it wouldn’t change a thing. It just seems that in the essence of fandom, at its root…some people just want to hate. The hate, but guess what? They read. And they buy. And they hate some more, and they read and they buy.
So hate as much as you like—we love you anyway!

JM: Now I know you want to talk a bit more, as we did last week, about “writers breaking in.” One aspect I’d like to focus on is just getting out there and producing your own comic, via Image, yourself, or whatever. You said Marvel is always looking everywhere for new talent.
Is this one of the places you look?

JQ: Yeah. We sure do.
As we talked about last week, the cold submission is a much, much more difficult place to get discovered. Having a comic we can look at makes it much easier, and it’s already in the language of comics. It’s a much, much easier way for us to look at the material, and to digest it. You can see very early on how someone handles dialogue, what they can do, and if they really know how to write for comics.

JM: And due to this wonderful system of vacuum tubes we have called the “Internet,” collaboration is possible across borders—

JQ: —and let me interject, it’s a lot easier and a lot cheaper, too, collaborating via the Web. Back in the day, we might have asked if you had something in print or at least if you had an ashcan or sample we could look at.
But now, in the digital world, people are able to put their own comic together without spending a dime on getting it printed up.

With the digital age and the world getting so much smaller and people finding each other across continents, finding people and resources as a writer is so much easier now. There’s just no excuse for a writer not to find someone with the similar passion to create and collaborate with them. Plenty of people are looking to create comic books right now. I just wish I had these resources and opportunities back when I was breaking in! I would have taken full advantage of them. So when I hear a writer say, “You know, I’d love to team up with an artist, but I just haven’t been able to…” keep looking.
There are tons of artists out there looking to break in as well, and they need a story to draw and they want to find someone simpatico with the way they feel. So go out there. Find those people. Do it.

JM: Crossing those borders, it seems Marvel finds lots of international artistic talent, but very few writers.
Why is that? Is it as simple as language?

JQ: It’s funny you should mention this, because I has this very conversation with a friend of mine just the other day whose parents are writers working in another field but English wasn’t their first language, so they were having trouble trying to crack the U.S. market and the main reason was because it’s very difficult to do so when your dominant language isn’t English. The truth of the matter is that, in my years at Marvel, I’ve only seen one writer who didn’t speak English as a first language who was able to write strong and compelling material for American-style comic books.
And that was Akira Yoshida, who wrote Tales of Asgard and all sorts of other stuff for us.

We find, almost every time, that no matter how great a writer might be in the comics field in another country, it just doesn’t translate well. They might be able to get from point A to point B in a story just fine, but there’s a certain flow, along with certain colloquialisms and turns of a phrase, that are just missing. Structure can be different, too. What might be considered classical story structure in the U.S. might not be considered that in Japan, or anywhere else for that matter. It’s very, very difficult for writers to go from one culture to another. And of course, that’s a two-way street. I think a lot of great U.S. writers would have a hard time writing for a foreign market. I’m sure I couldn’t do it.

JM: I gotta work in one quick plug.
Our pal Scott Dunbier over at IDW is putting together Hero Comics, a one-shot for August, and Marvel is kindly allowing us to publish some Art Adams cover recreations he did as commissions, such as the Hulk #181 here.
Is this guy wonderfully freakin’ insane, or what?

JQ: The guy is crazy. He’s also one of those guys who has inspired, by now, generations of artists with the work he produces, and he continues to do so today.
The only problem with Art Adams artwork—and I’m sure Art will be the first to tell you this as well—is that there’s just not enough of it out there! He is amazing. But I think that will be changing. He’s got some irons in the fire with us.

JM: That’s right.
A project with [writer] Jeph Loeb, right?

JQ: Yes, but about that, I can say no more.

JM: Then you are on to reader questions.

Mike asks:

Mr.
Quesada,

Could you please give your readers an honest, straightforward and most importantly BS-free explanation about what is causing the delay with the new Spider-Woman series? The book was originally due on April 1st, then I believe it was June 3rd, then June 24th and now it has been canceled and supposedly will be resolicited at a later date.
Could you give your readers an idea of exactly how the book fell so badly behind schedule, and in the future could you please refrain from soliciting a book until you are certain that it will be ready when promised?

JQ: First off, Mike, I really have to take issue with the way you asked your question. You’re pretty much saying, “Could you not lie about it, like you always do,” and I don’t think that’s cool. No matter the subject, I always try to shoot straight with you guys, whether you like the message I have for you or not. I don’t do these columns every week to hide from the readers—I’m here to speak about whatever you want to talk about.

The reason for the delay on Spider-Woman is quite simple. As we’ve announced previously, that series is going to debut as the first of our all-new Motion Comics, a major digital initiative that we believe is going to become a bigger and bigger part of our publishing program as more and more of the world turns to digital platforms for their entertainment. The drawback with working in a new medium like this is that there’s plenty of experimentation. Everything is new, and so little has been done before, so it’s taking us all a bit longer to work out the kinks than it normally would, and we’d rather delay and get it right than rush it along being only a fraction of what it could be. If it was just a normal comic, we’d be way ahead of schedule—but it isn’t.
This is Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev, after all, who did a five-year run on Daredevil with nary a misstep—I think they’ve got the kind of track record for delivery that you can look at and understand that the delay isn’t from a lack of work being produced. Brian’s already written a huge number of scripts.
Here’s a tiny taste of what’s to come:

Spider-Woman

TITLE: AGENT OF S.W.O.R.D.

BY Brian Michael Bendis

EPISODE SEVEN

Immediate continuation from last episode. Same scene, same setting.

From behind Jessica on her hands and knees looking wide past the crowded street to the sky just over her head and a half a block away.

AN OLD SCHOOL AVENGERS QUINJET is coming in for a low hover. The baydoor opens to reveal... THE NEW AVENGERS.

Spider-man, Luke Cage, Captain America (catching his shield) Wolverine, Ms. Marvel, Ronin, and Mockingbird.

Everyone is there to help. There to help a friend. It's a real amazing moment in the life of Jessica Drew. A moment she didn't know she had coming to her.

(A full page spread in the comic)

SPIDER-WOMAN NARRATION

They're Skrulls. They're all Skrulls. Not the Avengers. Not Wolverine or Carol Danvers.
Skrulls!!

Dazzle Me Softly asks:

Hey Joe! When can we see more Daniel Acuna interior artwork? I know he was listed as a Young Gun and his work in Eternals was awesome, but now all we see him doing is covers (which are awesome) but I’d love to see him do more.
Maybe a book like X-Force?

JQ: Keep your ear to the ground, Dazzle.
Señor Acuña has some big news coming on a September book! Your suggestion isn’t far from the truth!

Nemo asks:

Hey Joe, what's going on with Moon Knight? Is it taking a month off or is there something more to it? Writer Charlie Huston turned him into my favorite character and I'd hate to see the book get quietly cancelled.

JQ: You haven't seen the last of Moon Knight, trust me.
Look for clues to Moon Knight's destination in the denouement to Moon Knight #30. We are very excited about Moon Knight's future.

Steven Ghost asks:

Are there any big plans for X-Factor #50?

JQ: Definitely—but there are EVEN BIGGER plans for the following issue.

RMFJ asks:

When will we next get to see Rick Jones/A-Bomb, and any chance of an explanation behind his new alter-ego?

And with Deadpool and Hulk as top sellers right now, is there any chance we can see the two appear in the same book anytime soon?

JQ: Check out HULK 13 for next appearance of A-Bomb and INCREDIBLE HULK #600 for his senses-shattering origin.
As for Deadpool and Hulk, looks like we’re on the same wavelength, RMFJ!

Zach asks:

Any plans on a release date for Ultimate Comics Avengers and Ultimate Comics Spider-Man? With Ultimatum #5 delayed until July 15, would that mean both books have to come out in August so you don’t spoil the story?

JQ: The release of Ultimate Comics must be closely coordinated with the mind-blowing conclusion of Ultimatum.
Stay tuned for adjusted street dates.
But have you seen the awesome covers to our Ultimate Requiem specials in July?

Chaka KAHNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! Asks:

I know you have said in the past that “dead means dead,” but you think there’s any chance we’ll see Kraven the Hunter coming back anytime soon? It would be awesome to him and his daughter up for another run at Spidey.

JQ: There’s definitely more to Ana Kraven than meets the eye, and both she and the mysterious woman we saw with her at the end of the recent “Kraven’s First Hunt” storyline in Amazing Spider-Man will be turning up again when you least expect them—and as the build-up to the much-rumored SINISTER 666 begins! But Kraven himself is pretty dead, and has been for a good long time now.
Still, that didn’t stop us with Bucky…

InfamousMB asks:

Hey Joe, I'm really diggin’ the Marvel Noir titles.
Can you give any info regarding other characters getting the Noir treatment?

JQ: Yes, we are. Here are a couple covers for you to mull over.

Gypsy Kill Krew asks:

Hey Joe, what’s the fate of the Initiative and Camp Hammond? Will there still be a team in every state? I know Norman Osborn’s still looking for all the Initiative information that Tony’s been keeping in his head, but where are all these heroes going to go? Will Norman enlist them?

JQ: These are some relevant and well-timed questions you have, Gypsy—especially as the answers are all revealed in Avengers: The Initiative #23, on sale this week! And you know how I hate to spoil your reading experience!

Father Jim asks:

The Defenders have always been an awesome concept for a super-team, and they've made some odd appearances since they last had an ongoing series.
Any plans to permanently resurrect them, and not in a tongue

JQ: Father Jim, if you want to get your fix of one of the coolest versions of the DEFENDERS to come around since the original line up, check out the current arc of HULK (10 through 12) featuring…the original line up!!!! The bone-crushing, beam-blasting, fist-pounding action is brought to you by masters Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. This jaw-dropping image of the DEFENDERS VS.
THE OFFENDERS is also available in Hulk size as a poster available at your local comic shop now!

i understand the need to explore new avenues for comics to be seen in, and while i also understand there may be a new market out there for the digital motion comic, isn't it going to hurt sales of comics if they keep putting delays on the books? I mean leaving out the fact that comics in there own right are pretty much the story boards to movies any way and allow fans to see a "blockbuster like" movie for 2.99 every month wouldn't it be better to release the comic so that fans can see it then worry about the motion comic. i mean the Buzz on Spider-Woman has turned to a pretty bitter uproar and while i'm sure as upset as fans are they're still going to buy the book it's still going to make them see marvel as a company in a negative light and i can't believe it helps Maleev's career either. Bendis is still putting out monthly titles but Maleev's books have been coming out later and later. In the end i just refuse to believe that the regular fans are crying because marvel has yet to put out a full digital comic. And unless the digital comic is going to have real animation and not just segmented characters and backgrounds moving i don't see why people would want to pay as much as i feel it would cost to make it. ..

I don't think the person posing the question regarding the Spider-Woman book was accusing Joe Q. of lying, rather we never get a full or definite answer on many of the questions asked. With that, I'd have to agree. Also, I'm bummed the printed comic is being replaced completely. I use comics as a medium to get my nieces and nephews to read, I hope they won't all be replaced by something they have to watch on TV or a computer screen. Don't many of us sit behind one of the two (or both) too much already? Maybe I'm jumping the boat, but isn't this the direction Marvel seems to want to head? I've already begun to loose interest in SPIDER-WOMAN: AGENT OF SWORD, but I'm won't say, "No", until I've given it a chance. ....And as for MARVEL DIVAS, perhaps if the complaints made against the title were seriously read, then one would understand why there seems to be so much negativity to the title before it's already published. (I wonder if it's even worth repeating.) But regardless I do think I'll enjoy the concept of a Sex In the City type super heroine book and I'm a fan of all four starring characters (I can already see who the "Carrie" is, and who the "Samantha" is, etc). I just hope Marvel begins to focus on its more popular heroines who need spotlight time. Fingers crossed. ..

Yeah the guy should have worded it better so as not to solely implicate Joe alone.....Quesada doesn't lie.....Marvel on the other hand as a whole, does. Breevort's infamous "the schedule we have in office is not the schedule we release to the public" comment during the Civil War debacle speaks volumes on that one.....But yeah looking at the whole Spider-Woman thing......Getting the comic out to the fans is always going to be more important then the possible number of people willing to pay for the digital initiative.....Why risk possibly turning away long form customers who will purchase the book on a risky internet business possibility? Because you expect them to buy the book when it comes out anyway like a Zombie?....Doesn't work that way anymore...

Hey guys, long time fan here of both Marvel and Joe, I have been following your artwork for years and years, I am happy to see you are where you are right now You are an inspiration, as are many of the comic artists today.....Anyway,..I have a questions that I am sure a lot of people have wondered...My dad has been working on a story for many years now. I have done some of the illustrations and tried to put it into some sort of short animated dvd. That works fine, but I feel that I cant do him any justice with the scope of the entire world he has created in his mind. He writes it down we have all sorts of ideas and dreams and plans, but still I feel that I cannot do enough for him. Would you have any advice on how to bring a story like his to life? I believe that only a series of comic books could really tell the story the way that he wants it told, but do not have any idea on how to go about something like that without completely spamming and things of that nature which I dont think is going to get us anywhere.....Thanks for your time, anything would help!....Jason....

Hi Joe, I have been a Marvel fan for years and always enjoyed every comic I have bought. I was saddened that She-Hulk got canceled. I know Jen will be fine but I must know the fate of She-Hulk's team the Lady Liberators. Marvel is not going to let this team go to waste just because Jen doesn't have a book anymore. They are still going to pop up in the Marvel Universe?..

Punisher, Elektra, Deadpool, and the Hulk? What are they, the New Defenders? That's not my question, but it does sound like an interesting story.....Anyway, I've heard that Dark Reign will only last for about a year. What does that mean for the Dark Avengers? Cancellation? Line-up change? I love the comic and would hate to see it go...

Hey Joe! thanks for having the Defenders come back. I miss The Hulk and Namor due to all this X-men, Captain America, Iron man items coming up.....Appreciate Thor and Daredevil aswell. Finally! Something besides Wolverine and spiderman being stuffed down my throat all over the place.....My Question to you Joe is,..Any Plans to have a Deadpool Team up in the Future? He has his Osborn/Thunderbolts solo comic, you have your Deadpool X-men ordeal...but what about like...Daredevil and Deadpool? Punisher vs Deadpool Round 2? Shoot, I'd even go as far to see Deadpool vs The Kingpin/Dr. Doom!....Obsessed? maybe, Bored? Yes.....I love Dr. Doom coming into his bad a** self, I love Osborn getting his BUTT handed to him by the Mighty Avengers under Ant-Man (Love Loki coming back in the picture. :) Sets up for good stuff coming up!)....Namor Artwork Definently needs to be kept by Loeb. I'm hating seeing Namor look like a grizzly drunk or a MAJOR less perfect physique as I have been seeing him. Don't care how old namor is. lol....Appreciate any answers from you!..

The following is from a recent edition of Lying in the Gutters at CBR (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=20702):...."I understand that as a side-effect of the characters Cloak and Dagger joining the X-books as regular team characters, that their mini-series, in the works for a year, has been shelved for 2009. The creators will be working on other Marvel titles in the interim. Probably a tad higher profile..."....I'm not sure how accurate that is. Hopefully Mr. Quesada will clear this up in next weeks column...

Hey Joe!....I am utterly and totally confused by your post and the July HULK solicitations. INCREDIBLE HULK #600? The old numbering is back? Please clarify if you can how Marvel arrived at the magic #600...if #600 is out the month after #12, I only count 599! (And that's AFTER going through my full series in long boxes here and adding up everything since #474!) This is the trouble with renumbering. Thor? No problem! Daredevil? Cake! Hulk? HELP!....But wait! Your latest blog post mentions HULK #13 and the B&W cover you posted seems to be #14 (even more specifically, NEW HULK #14 per its filename). Color me confused! Is HULK regaining its original numbering for good, like THOR, or going back to its 'new' scheme in August? Or are the Hulks splitting off into their own books with one from #600 and the other from #13, like Dark Reign and DARK WOLVERINE? Is something even more insidious afoot?....~G...

Hey Joe, ..First off, I just want to say that I love the fact that you take time out of every week to Q&A with us. Not too many Editor In Chiefs woud do that! So thanx!..My question is about the Sentry. I've read pretty much everything he is in and that is A LOT lately. I loved the original series as well by Jenkins and Lee. But what is with him being such a crybaby/sissy boy lately. In Dark Avengers, he is crying to himself and unsure of everything! He was such a heroic/ bad mutha in The Sentry series and the new Punisher series, but everywhere else he isnt. Whats up with this? Oh and What the heck happened to him in secret invasion?!? We still don't know! Please tell me he gets his own series again! Thanks for reading this if you read this!!..Your Friendly neighboorhood Aaron..

Hey Joe...I'm really digging the Amazing Spider-Man right now. I was just wondering if we might be seeing any of some of my favorite classic Spidey villains in any upcoming issues. Like the Lizard, Electro, Rhino, or Sandman. Or any of the other classic baddies. I can't think of many classic Spidey villains that I don't like. Except maybe Rocket Racer or Big Wheel......

..Just a quick question regarding the HULK renumbering....There are 474 issues of the old series...There are 112 issues of the recent series...There are 12 issues of the new series as of May...That totals 598 issues. The July issue should be #13 (599).....Where is the missing issue? You've mentioned HULK #13 before (and in this very column). Can you shed some light on this?....Thanks...

Hey, Joe. I've really been digging all titles that tie closely into Dark Reign, but as a kind of "event" (or rather, the aftermath of an event...), I know that it will eventually end to make way for the next big thing. But what will this mean for my new favorite team book Dark Avengers? Once Norman's out of power, they won't really make sense anymore... So is DA basically a maxi-series, or will it continue after Dark Reign ends in some form or another? ..

Hey, Joe ~ thanks for sharing those Spider-woman pages, they are insanely good!..i have some artist questions for ya!....Jae Lee ~ is he done with the Dark Tower series or just taking the current volume off?....David Aja ~ does he have anything long-form on the horizon? i know he's got a 1 shot in the Immortal Weapons series, but i need more than a 1 shot a year. :-)....Marcos Martin ~ anything big on his plate?....When do we get to hear who will be teamed up with Andy Diggle on Daredevil after Bru and Lark depart?....thanks!..~a..

Hey Joe, just wondering whats with all the numbering changes in the next couple months? when it was done for FF and Amazing the math was simple, same for Daredevil here in the next couple months. but what about Thor, Hulk and Cap? How does their numbering add up since when they first got solo titles they took them over from established titles? Also any other title we can expect to return to their original numbering anytime soon?..

About the "hating" on Marvel Divas - let's call it what it really in - criticizing how sexist this book appears to be. ....If Marvel produces comics that are offensive female readers, why shouldn't people "hate" on it? ....So what if it's not for me? Why would I want to support a company that produces any offensive, sexist material? Why shouldn’t everyone speak out against it?....While the book hasn't come out yet, what has been released so far are blatantly sexist. ....But what troubles me the most is that Marvel thinks people want to read this and this constitutes strong female characters. ....The fact that Joe doesn't get why people are upset makes it even clearer that the leadership at Marvel does not understand the concept of strong female characters and what female readers want to read.....Does Marvel actually want to attract female readers or is the whole point that Marvel comics are only for guys?....

THANK YOU. I was just about to write nearly this same comment before I decided to scroll down. Why should I support a company that continually insults me? I first came to reading Marvel comics after Joey Q appeared on the Colbert Report (a fairly highbrow satire) promoting Civil War (a fairly high-concept series). I came in thinking "Alright, Marvel is a company that respects their readers' intelligence." Marvel Divas shows that this is true for neither sex. It insults women by trying to simultaneously promote itself as "a look into what it's like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry" (written by a man, no less) and also as "hot, sudsy fun". It insults men by assuming a) they won't read a book about a group of women unless b) you slap a lot of tits on the cover.....But then, what should I expect from a company that is so scared of ~alienating~ its core readership (i.e. men) that they were hesitant about putting out "female product"? (Which, despite sounding like Marvel-themed tampons, actually just meant "girls' T-shirts and necklaces")...

Ashley, while you have incredibly valid points, I think they're misdirected at the creative team of, MARVEL DIVAS. As Joe Q. pointed out, people should read the book first, then make comments. I think you, myself, and others might be pleasantly surprised how strong, beautiful, fun, and independent we see Hellcat, Photon, Black Cat, and Firestar. Fingers crossed anyway! ....Here's a little more about the author of the mini-series, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Aguirre-Sacasa....In the the original announcement for MARVEL DIVAS, Aguirre-Sacasa was quoted saying, "-- but I also think the series is doing to a deeper place, asking question about what it means…truly means…to be a woman in an industry dominated by testosterone and guns." This shows there's hope for a realistic approach to real women, right?..

I have to agree with Alexa. Why isn't this book written by a woman, considering the theme? I wonder if Paty Cockrum would consider writing for Marvel? I would love to read her take on this...

Say it ain't so Joe! It can't be true that Greg Pak is leaving Skaar: Son of Hulk with issue #13 when the title is retitled simple as Son of Hulk? Is this truly the end of Skaar for Pak or is it far from over? On a similiar subject, Pak has confirmed some consulting work he did for the upcoming Planet Hulk animated movie, so any news or updates about it you can unveil? ..

Hey Joe. Is there anyway you can have Wolverine go on a rampage and kill every character in the Marvel Universe. Unless this is the finish to Ultimatum which I honestly was into until it got delayed and now I could care less. I figure since Wolvie is in everything anyway and getting new books every month that could be dedicated to other characters that fans on here are constantly asking for, why not just have him off the entire Universe and save everyone involved the trouble. He used to be one of my favorite characters and now I cancel titles from my list everytime he pops up. Enough with Wolverine already. We get it, he's awesome and that's why he's getting his own movie. But when 30 different writers are writing him, it kind of dilutes the things about the character that we love. Oh and you could just change the name of the company to Wolverine too. Just a thought.

Hey Joe, loving Dark Reign so far bringing the villains to the limelight especially my favorite The Hood...quick question...why is it that more comics are 3.99 with 38 pages? for example New Avengers 51 was 38 pages for 3.99 but Guardians of the Galaxy(great book by the way) are 38 pages is for 2.99?....

Hi Joe,....Are there any plans in the works for former the former 'new' New Warriors and X-Characters such as Jubilee, Chamber, Wind Dancer, Beak, and Angel? Jubilee is pretty deserving of a regular role in a comic, be it alongside Wolverine, fellow X-Men, or something entirely different. Chamber and Wind Dancer are both pretty popular themselves, and have good fan appeal. Are Beak and Angel now living normal married life with their children? ..Thanks!..

Hey Joe, i got a few questions:..- In Messiah Complex, there was a Madrox dupe who was sent in one of the two futures by Forge. What happened to him?..- With Apocalypse in the future depicted in Messiah War, are there any plans for the 616 Apocalypse to return? And would his return affect the X-Men and the Dark Reign?..- Mighty Avengers #24 showed the first cracks in The Cabal. Will Osborn's inner struggles be a key factor in the next months, alongside the two Avengers teams? ..

Regarding my question and the way I asked it...I had already asked about the delays with Spider-Woman about a month ago as part of a two part question and Mr. Quesada did not address the Spider-Woman question at all. Rather than answer my question he turned it into an opportunity for him to hype the new Ultimate Comics line. Also, I was trying to make sure that Mr. Quesada gave me a serious answer rather than one of his "hucksterish" answers. That's the persona that Mr. Quesada largely adapts when answering these questions and it can be frustrating when you are looking for a serious and thoughtful answer. I would also like to point out that Mr. Quesada did not address the last part of my question at all. (the part about not soliciting books until Marvel are reasonably sure that they will be ready when promised.) I appreciate the fact that Mr. Quesada does this (almost) weekly column but at the same time the way he answers questions can be frustrating. I really believe that Mr. Quesada could do a much better job of reading the questions carefully to see what we are really asking and trying to give us the type of answers we are looking for. Obviously I'm not talking about spoilers but more about being straightforward with us when things don't go as expected...

Hey Joe! After Jason Aaron finishes his Ghost Rider run with that mini, will the main series be coming back and if so, could you tease a creative team? Also, any chance of getting a MAX Ghost Rider? I think the horror elements of the character would do so well in that format. Speaking of demonic figures, when will see Mephisto again? Will he be playing any role at all in the future of ASM? Finally, please, please , please bring back the original Hobgoblin!..

Joe, I'm looking at joining digital comics soon but what is stopping me at the moment is the gaps in issues on some of the titles, for example Captain America has issues 1 to 21 of the current series but then jumps straight to 26. If i'm going to start reading a comic I want to know I'm getting a straight run, I don't want to read part of a comic then jump a few issues. I know this is all still a work in progress but you guys have got to fill in the missing issues so we can get a full story. Is there any plans on fixing these gaps soon?..

Hey Joe I had some questions regarding some of Marvel's books. I noticed in the advanced solicitations that Moon Knight and Ghost Rider aren't listed. I know that this is the second month that Ghost Rider was not solicited. Is the Moon Knight and Ghost Rider titles canceled much like the Iron Fist title? What's to become of the characters if the books are canceled? Or is it Marvel's plan to take the titles that may not be selling well, cancel them in print and then continue them as web comics on Marvel.com?.. ;

Long Question for Joe:..I’m really hyped about Brubaker’s upcoming Marvels Project tying together the origins of Golden Age heroes and their roles in the superhuman arms race. My favorite GA hero is Keen Marlow, an American journalist imprisoned in Nazi Germany and given their version of the Super Soldier serum by a rebel scientist to become the mighty Destroyer. ....But the 60’s Invaders series et al dismissed Keen’s existence, establishing that British journalist Brian Falsworth was imprisoned by the Germans (with Roger Aubrey, future Dyna-Mite) where the exact same German scientist gave him the SSS formula that turned him into the Destroyer. (Falsworth later passed on the name to Aubrey and became Union Jack.) ....Then, the recent Destroyer MAX series (great stuff!) and OHOTMU confirmed that Keen Marlow was indeed the original Destroyer, and I see he’ll be featured yet again (with that gorgeous cover) in USA Comics Special #1. I’m not normally a continuity geek, but I figured this would be important to the Marvels Project (and make for a cool “cover-up” story) -- any idea if USA Comics or Brubaker will smooth out the origin issue once and for all? ....
