NORTHLANDERS #17

Written by Brian Wood; Art by Vasilis Lolos; Cover by Massimo Carnevale

"The Viking Art of Single Combat" continues. On a snowy coastline of Norway, two Vikings face off in single combat. Seconds slow to minutes. Minutes slow to hours. Then, slower still, until the fight takes on a greater meaning. Viking warfare is deconstructed and dissected in this bitter and lonely brawl to the death with visually stunning art from Vasilis Lolos (Last Call).

The art leaves something to be desired but the prose and the wit with which the narrator is speaking ids the whole point of this comic. It is very intelligent as well as very realistic. It seems that the narrator is on the sidelines watching, kind of like a coach, and regaling the tale of how War is fought to some younger male while the other two spar...

I'm still having fun reading this series.  It's something to break up the hero comics.  I heard BW say an in interview that it's not all facts.  Some stuff he made up because he wanted it to be fun and not all research.

Nah. If you can't draw detail, then why draw at all? It seems like something on the back of a cereal box. Perhaps one should read the Sagas a bit more before taking on the vikings. Eyrbyggjasaga is wicked thick with supernatural perceptions of the vikings. You may have read Njal's Saga but maybe re-read it. You're missing the original philosophy of battle and feuds; the culture of emotional driven bloodlust. Or perhaps, simply in attemting to modernize that philosophy, you fail. There was a deep practicality to the vikings and there ways of fighting but here it just seems inane. Anyway, good luck on future projects. With allot of work, you could have somehting going. I would love to see more medieaval culture and war comics.

well besides the fact there is no word for fuck in old Norse this is pretty good i like it. the armor styles look authentic  and it looks action packed and compelling to the point you could follow this.
i actually might start reading comics and graphic novels again.
