So, it was kinda sad to leave Nashville, after six weeks that felt so much longer, I'd made alot of friends. Songwriters, Singers, Musicians, Publishers.. the titles go on for miles.. however, ive never been to England so that should be cool.
I wanna do a shout out to Rick Tiger, he ran 'the doghouse', a hot dog and burger outlet that was attached to the fiddle and steel guitar bar, i really liked the fiddle and steel.. great 'music' bar, not a party or tourism bar.. Its where Rascall Flatts got their break, its the bar that Toby wrote 'I love this bar' about. I had some awesome nights onstage there, great bar, great people. Rick was the core of it for most of us. thanks man. sounds corny, but like a big family thing. I played a few nights there too. got to Nashville Airport, got slugged US$220 per extra item, as you can imagine, thats not cheap with my all 3 guitars and pedal case 'excess'.. but what could i do.. i needed them. checked in, sat there in the terminal, thinking.. wow, what an amazing trip. Isn't it a real shame how we too often wait untill its over for reflection, and most of the time dont appreciate as it happens?? those moments when we do fully appreciate the 'right now' are the most breath taking times of our life.
Like standing with John Michael Montgomery and casually chatting over a beer. here is a guy i've been a fan of for so many years, i mean, my mum and dad walked down the aisle to him. He wrote 'i swear' and 'i can love you like that' and so many others. Here was i just chilling with him.
Having coffee with Gary Allan in his home was cool, talking about guitars and jamming in his loungeroom.. Playing for Gretchen Wilson and John Rich after the bar has closed down, its just them out there, and us onstage. Brent Mason talks me through his guitar rig, one on one.. playing his guitar.. 'the' one guitar that played the most memorable solo's of modern country music history. Watching 'the players' live.. meeting them.
Being proud enough of the songs i wrote in Nashville, that id say they are some of the best ive ever written.. all 20 of them. Some great co-writes and some great friends.
I met and played with some real A-lister musicians over there, and had the time of my life, but let me say this.. Our guys in Australia are just as good.. the most common misconception is that. Its basically a numbers game.. Our players are amongst the best in the world, its just that population rules USA to have more of them. Dont get me wrong, The US players are amazing, however, understand this:
players like Duncan Toombs, Scott Hills, Mal Lancaster, Scotty Greenaway, Bill Risby, Michael Varecka, Glen Hannah, Brad Bergen, Rod McCormack, Ian Lees, James Gillard, Stuart French, Michel Rose & Tomi Graso and tonnes more.. (i'll never fit them all in)
would easily scare a few of the dudes over here.. i mean that.
So, on to Chicago.. the great lakes are something to see.. OMG! I thought we were flying near an ocean, the lake was so big.. just scary.
plane delayed on runway for 2hrs for a storm that came from no-where. when we got in the air, i tried to sleep, but there was this blessing of a child behind me who kindly kept kicking my chair evry 20 mins or so.. awww, how cute.
F*~K O*^!!!
Arrive london, so tired, trashed.. My eyes are falling outta my head. longest line for screening ive ever seen, theres a level 5 security on at heathrow im told.. No-one told me that In Nashville..
finally, out of the screening. its 6.30am. waiting for my baggage.. 7am, 8am, hmm..
after the next flight from chicago arrives, 9.30.. and my stuff isn't on that either.. well, im tired, im angry, i've paid a fortune for this stuff to be here, and its not here.
i need someone to yell at.. I know i shouldn't but, i just need to.
the guitars and bag turn up at 12.30pm on a third chicago to london flight.. but not my acoustic. GRRRR!! anyway, by now im ropable.. i wanna hurt someone behind a desk. so i decide to cool it down, fill in the missing baggage report, smile through my teeth and avoid opening my jaw, cause if i open my mouth, someone's gonna cop it.
guitar showed up 2 days later at the house.
So here i am in England with a crazy and cool bunch of pom's.. travelling around the countryside in a van playing these amazing places, singing my own songs and catching some people sing along.. quite an experience. I like to talk about cricket over here.
I'll be taking a stack of photos, the'yll be up in due time. we've only done three shows so far, i'll give a UK update when theres a few more shows under the belt. :)
stay cool, im off for a cuppa.
