This Saturday evening we'll begin a tradition. Well, hopefully. It's rather optimistic of me to announce a "First Annual" tradition. But what the heck. You only live once (although I suppose you can't even be sure of that).
A good friend of mine has organized a group of dancers to come to Asbury Lanes Saturday night to reenact the zombie dance from Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video at my HALLOWEEN XTRAVAGANZA. That ought to be fabulous. I just hope they don't trip over any bowling pins.
You see, this show of mine is taking place in a bowling alley – complete with bowling lanes, bowling balls and bowling shoes. The idea of performing music (not to mention dance) in such a venue is surreal to me, which is exactly why we'll be there Saturday.
It will be a night of Halloweenish rock n roll and I've asked my friends to join me in this wacky undertaking. Tony Shanahan, who started the 'Slaves Of New Brunswick' with me in the late 80s and usually works with Patti Smith now, will play bass and sing a few tunes. My songwriting partner Bob Burger, whose been making a name for himself around the Jersey Shore as of late, will sing Todd Rundgren's "Wolfman Jack". Tom Brislin, who has played keyboards with everyone from Debbie Harry to Meat Loaf to Yes, will be in attendance, as will Marc Muller, who has played with a list that includes Shania Twain and Tommy Shaw. Don Dazzo and Bill Siegal of Everlounge (and the Whirling Dervishes), who usually perform their version of 'You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch' at my annual XMAS XTRAVAGANZA, will perform 'Sweet Transvestite' from Rocky Horror. Other Xmas Xtravaganza veterans who will perform include Faith Hahn, Barbara Hahn and Sally Burtnik, as well as Chuck Buck (usually the XXSanta) who will sing THE Halloween theme song. Ray Andersen, also known as Mr. Ray, will sing 'Werewolves Of London' and Patti Maloney will sing 'I Want Candy'.
The show will also feature a performance by the legendary band DEAD ELVI, and there will be other surprise guests.
I've asked the performers to come in costume and now I'm asking you.
I'm extending the holiday actually, as this show will take place the night AFTER Halloween. I figure anything worth doing is worth over-doing, so why not let the holiday drag on one more night.
The evening, in part, will benefit The BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF MONMOUTH COUNTY.
We are rehearsing for this crazy-assed gig. I can't wait. There will be tons of wacky tunes, including the world premere of a new song Bob & I wrote titled '(Have yourself a) Happy Little Halloween'.
