how does that saying go? Is it an actual coined phrase or am I that much of a pop junky...if it makes you happy it can't be that bad. I think Sheryl was referring to a love relationship in her song, but the theme still applies to what I wanted to write about.

Do that which makes you happy.

I really enjoyed myself at my gig last night at Poor David's Pub. Somehow the songs that I play all the time at my solo gigs, when I play them with other people that I really love and respect on stage next to me, suddenly the tunes take on a whole new life. I don't think there is any secret to my happiness and contentment when it comes to experiencing music...I like sharing the experience with my artist friends that I love.

Bonnie...she and I have butt heads many times in our efforts to find our way through our artist paths, but we continue to grow closer and more respectful of one another. Sharing the stage with her is such a joy for me. I remember getting booked on the same show with her band and my old band, Anytown, back in 2003. It was at the Volente Beach festival on Lake Travis in Austin. We arrived at the gig and I got to see her entire set for the first time as a spectator and I remember being moved to tears at least twice during her set. She was just so honest and vulnerable up there singing about her life and her experiences...and not to mention that she sounded like an angel. I couldn't help applying that experience to my own and thinking, "this is what a fan expects of an artist...for them to just be honest and truthful in their expression...nothing more, nothing less". It seemed very clear and simple at the time, although I still struggle with it everyday.

I remember walking up to the stage after her set and the only words that came out of my mouth when she came over to me to say hello were, "I love U!". She sort of laughed and said, "I love u too, Colby". Thankfully, she understood what I meant as we didn't really know each other that well at the time.

I remember another time when I was on a gig layover in Austin and I met Bonnie and some of her friends out on the town. We ended up back at her friend Rob's place late night playing guitars and singing. This was the first time that we got the opportunity to sing together. I remember the room getting really quite when she was singing and how everyone's face sort of lit up when we hit the choruses where we sang together...the harmonies were so beautiful.

These moments are what define my musical experience really. I spend most of my time navigating through the experience trying to create as many of those moments as possible. They are so simple, but they can't be forced or contrived...they just seem to happen right when you need them to.

Here is one of those moments for me:
