NEIL COWLEY TRIO
It’s impossible to think of jazz and punk together but according to the Observer Music Monthly, it’s “impossible not to think of early Clash” when listening to the Neil Cowley Trio. A classically trained pianist and outstanding composer, Neil Cowley was the recipient of last year’s BBC Jazz Award for Best Album with Displaced, placing his trio at the forefront of the so-called British ‘post–jazz’ movement. With his finger-bleeding energy, hook-laden, powerfully dynamic and ridiculously catchy tunes (he also played keyboards on Duffy’s album Rock Ferry), Cowley’s vigorous approach is sure to go down a storm on Thursday July 16 at 8pm.

SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA
The Spanish Harlem Orchestra is the standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by the pianist, arranger, and producer Oscar Hernández, the ensemble has reintroduced New York City salsa to music lovers worldwide. United We Swing, SHO’s third album, is a stunning follow up to their 2004 Grammy award-winning album Across 110th St and their 2002 Grammy nominated debut, Un Gran Día En El Barrio. See them for one performance only on Sunday July 19 at 7pm.

MUSIC FROM THE PENGUIN CAFÉ
The Penguin Café Orchestra was the brainchild of English composer Simon Jeffes. The Penguin’s quintessentially English sound - influenced by folk, bluegrass, avant-garde, classical, and pop, has enjoyed a continuing cult status. Their position among Irish music lovers cemented with different covers of their classic Music for a Found Harmonium.
Now, Simon’s son, the composer Arthur Jeffes has brought together a group of musicians to create Music from the Penguin Café. Following on from a very successful Glastonbury 2009 performance they perform at Galway Arts Festival on Friday July 17 at 8pm in the Radisson Hotel.
“Musical Knockout” - The Evening Standard
“After Music From the Penguin Cafe glided their way effortlessly through two 45-minute-long sets and an encore, the only thing left for the audience to do was jump straight to their feet and cheer in utter appreciation.” – Manchester City Life, June 2009

FEMI KUTI
Femi Kuti is the oldest son of the late Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti who pioneered the fusion of funk, soul, and traditional African music that became known as Afrobeat. Femi quit school to play alto sax in his father’s band in 1978 and went solo in 1986. Femi and his band Positive Force have completed six European tours and recorded three albums to date.

Fela sadly died in 1997 and his son inherited his mantel. Like his father, Femi speaks his mind in plain terms. ‘Sorry Sorry’ decries the civil wars and political corruption that have plagued so much of Nigeria and Africa’s history.
Writing about Femi Kuti’s  renowned live performances, Rolling Stone Magazine describing one show as “A frenzy of head-bouncin’ and rump-shakin. By the end of this high-energy, groove driven show, Kuti had the crowd believing that music could transport the world’.

Femi Kuti plays the Big Top on Wednesday July 22 at 8.30pm. Support is from Emmet Scanlan & What The Good Thought.
