With Les Paul's passing, the music world lost an incredible person that truly made this world a better place. Everyone I knew who had any contact with Les loved him & was touched by his generosity, kindness, support & brilliance.

A few years ago, I was recording at Capitol Records in Hollywood. Les was there & I went to say hello to him. We're chatting away & Les is telling all these stories from the old days...with incredible detail!
Finally I say, "Les , I'm sure you don't remember, but I was very young when I first met  you....." He interrupts me & proceeds to tell me, " Yeah, I remember. I was playing at Donte's in North Hollywood on a Monday Guitar night in 1974. You walked in & maybe you were around 20 years old. Everyone was saying you were the new hot, young, guitar player"

Wow, needless to say, I was shocked he could remember something like that from 30 years ago!!!  No wonder this man made so many incredible contributions to Music & the way we make it today!

On another note, I never played Les Paul Guitars too much. In general I've always been more of a 335 & L-5 kinda guy. However several months ago, I decided to order from the Gibson Custom Shop the recently released 50th anniversary "1959 Les Paul Standard".  Mike Mcguire & his team built me one from scratch. An incredible guitar! The new guitar arrived at my studio in Los Angeles the day Les died....Needless to say,  I will cherish that guitar & all the contributions from Les ...forever.

Lee,
Lovely story! Very sad day for the music world on many levels. Isn't it great to think how we all look up to some-one as players? Man, I love your music - you are an inspiration to me. infact been looking into going to see you in Europe from the UK later in the year.
best wishes from you friends here in England.
Dave

Lee,

Back in the eighties I met you @ "The Limelight" after you played @ The Roxy in Buckhead. And I had a similar experience with Bo Diddley. I played with him one weekend when I was 17. I ran into him during the Olympics in Atlanta and as I told him that it was a pleasure to play with one of music legends he too gave details of the gig.

In 1984 or '85 I went to NAMM and Les Paul and Chet Akins were to play but Les was sick and couldn't make it. It was the first time I'd heard Chet and was BLOWN away. I bought a cassette of Les Paul because if Chet sent me back home to the shed I knew Les Paul would make me rethink playing guitar based on Chet's comments during the show. You are right.... The universe has lost a talent, but his music will never die.

So now the mantle is now more on your shoulders to inspire the next generations of guitarist, but I'll tell you from personal growth you already have and I'm sure you will continue...

Peace,

PS I still play my vinyl of "Valdez in the Country" of the Guitar Player album I bought in 1974. Very smooth dude!
