So, I've already put out about 5 versions of "I Though She Was a Goth" over the years. I thought I was about done with that song - I'm not really playing live anymore, and there was no reason to re-record it...
....then Random House asked me to base a book on it. Obviously, I'll want to re-record it, with a female singer, since the genders are reversed in the book.
So I started this new band, The Chimneys. The idea was to record a new version of "Goth" and maybe a couple of other songs for the "book soundtrack" that'll be on the webpage, but I liked the sound so much (electric guitar and drums! Why didn't I think of that before?) that I've kept going, and now, in addition to a handful of songs on the soundtrack, TWO Chimneys albums are in the works - one of Bob Dylan covers, and one of originals (well, mostly old Revolving Door All Stars and Maritime Band songs, really, but still). Some old, long forgotten songs are being dredged out of retirement for this one, along with a few chestnuts that I just can't seem to record often enough - and there's at least one new song, "Doorbell Ditching" - the original version that I wrote with Tanner Strutzenberg (with whom I formed the band Scapegoat in 1994 or 95). Another "folk" version of that one with different lyrics is also floating around - it'll be in the film "At Last Okemah" this fall!
Anyway, no current plans to play any live Chimneys shows, but the albums are a go, and the book is gonna be good!
