Coastal Current

If you're looking for a chance to get a great view of the island, join hundreds of walkers and runners as they cross the Queen Isabela Memorial Causeway Saturday morning during the Longest Causeway Run & Wellness Walk.
This marks the 24th year of the event hosted by the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce.
More than 1,200 participants already have registered for the event and organizers anticipate another record year.
"We had 2,110 participants last year," said event organizer Betty Wells. "And we are seeing signs of an increase for this year."
Registration for the event continues through noon on Friday at the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce offices at Lighthouse Square. Late registrations will be held Friday evening and Saturday from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Community Center on Yturria Street - the starting line of the event.
The 10K, or 6.2-mile, race will begin at 10 a.m. and will take runners over the causeway and to finish line at Louie's Backyard.
Walkers will begin their 3-mile trek at 10:15 a.m. and will finish at the end of the causeway on the island side.
Only runners and walkers who register for the event will be allowed to cross the bridge on foot.
Transportation will be provided for walkers who wish to attend the awards ceremony at Louie's or back to the Port Isabel Community Center.
The winning time for the 10K run last year was 31 minutes and 41 seconds. The Longest Causeway Run is a certified USATF course event.
