Another dope show and we're getting there with the audience too..
Sweet! With our 3rd show at The Oasis I think we're finding our groove. The poets are coming out for the Slam (as always) AND we're finally getting some folks in the open-mic too. There are changes coming with the open-mic by the way... exciting changes.I swear there was more than a few months where it was just me in the open because everyone wanted to compete. Not that competition is bad but there is so much more to poetry than Slam.
That said, last Thursday's show was HOT! We had a few last minute changes to the line-up since the San Jose crew ran into some transportation issues and couldn't make it. Rolling with the blows is what we do here in The Town though so that's what we did. We opened up the slam list to a few extra folks and went with three teams in the Battle of The Ages.
Long story short - we won son! That's what we do though so no surprise there, we're all about cultivating a culture of excellence here in the "O". Also not surprising was the level of the work presented. You know what you're getting with SF and us but "Saltwater Sheet Music" (the youth team organized by Terry T.) brought some serious heat. The thing with the Slam though is the randomness of the draw and the judges. The kids drew the dreaded "A" slot and could never manage to come back on the home team.
In the open Slam we had 5 competitors vying for the victory. When the dust settled Jose Vadi (who was actually the '05 Grand Champ but didn't make the NPS trip) came away with the win and will move on to face the rest of the best in semi-finals early next year.
Then after the poetry was all said and done The Freeform Funktet took to the stage and rocked the house. More and more of the slam crowd is staying around for the party too so there was a nice little group of folks head nodding and dancing along with the band and the DJ after they finished their set.
All that to say - thanks! to the folks that came out, we hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did. To the folks that couldn't make it this month, that's okay... we'll be back next month with an even better show for you - The New Word Series FINALS! Stay tuned for more info.
