My first ever party political broadcast - it was easy, it was cheap, go and do it!

How about this?  We Yanks will help you convince the people of the UK of the advantages of a constitution and a bill of rights if you help us convince Americans of the advantages of universal health care.  Deal?

I was interested to see the uniform worn by the opposition to Obama's Universal Health care plans.  We seem to have paramilitary "defenders" over here in the U.K just now.  I'm not sure who or what they're all defending and from whom really.

Americans always make the mistake of asociating welfare and healthcare with "socialism".   Socialism means something else so why let them have all the credit for the  good things?  The Liberals introduced welfare and healthcare over here anyway.

If we can produce so much wealth in the industrialised world then universal healthcare and welfare are surely the least anyone can expect.  Unless we're all going backwards.

But what does universal health care actually mean, guys?  Does it mean everyone in need of medical treatment can ask for it if they want it?  Or does it mean that doctors can decide how long they let you live and what level of mobility you enjoy in old age?  This is the problem I have with it, you see.

As someone who is out of work in middle-youth, I'm naturally anxious that my long-term mortality isn't determined by the amount of national insurance contributions that I can no longer pay or the availability of affordable housing.  Perhaps this is the kind of debate they should be having in The States right now, rather than skating around the issue in generalist terms?

Meanwhile, I still think prevention is better than cure, folks.  I gave up wheat at the beginning of the month and have so far shed 10 pounds with very little effort at all.  This was the final frontier, so to speak, having successfully given up meat, dairy and coffee years ago.  I'm also about to graduate at long last... which is probably the best kind of health insurance there is these days... that and a Mediterrean diet rich in tomatoes and olive oil.

Incidentally, I once worked for a team of renal surgeons and .....

But we've never had anything approaching socialism in the Kingdom, Wills...
