I've been goofing around with the bad advice column "Ask Dr. Lev" for a while, I never expected anyone to actually ask me for help. This kid, who I'm pretty sure is French, wrote me this question and I actually had something to say on the subject. Here's the letter & the reply:

Hmmm...

I don't really know if I should be giving advice about this sort of thing but...

When something sucks, it's sometimes best to indulge in it's suckiness. Don't try to put it out of your head, feel the feelings as strongly as you can. This is what helps it pass. Ever been to an Italian Funeral? They freak the fuck out, mourn their brains out. I think this is a better way to deal with emotions than to subdue it like the Americans do.

IE, instead of saying "Ah, I don't need her, she's no good anyway..." say "Man, I wish she went for me, this sucks every denomination of ass".

Striking out is good for you though. Better to strike out then to not have tried.

Hope that helps.

Dear Dr Lev.
I agree with every f** word you just said. If you don't feel, you're not alive. You gotta let yourself mourn, hurt and feel the pain. It won't kill you, but dammit it will make you stronger. They're great learning experiences. It hurts like hell in the moment, but when you look back, you laugh your ass off and it makes it ok. thumbs up on the advice :D

Totally-it feels so good after a freakout like that. I'm terrible for escapism. I hide from everything, and it just keeps creeping back in. It's no good. Be mad, go on a tourettes-style rant, using the worst possible language that you can muster, cry unapologetically, wait until it passes, then release yourself. Good work Lev.

Lev,
Good advice! I love your work Sir. Much respect. Can't wait for the next video to come out. They always make me laugh and my friends are weary of me chasing them around with my laptop going, "You have to watch this new video! You have to watch this new video it is awesome!!!" Anyway,....now you are giving dating advice also...it's great!

dr. lev,
great advice. i would add one thing: Gxxxxr doesn't have to let the girl know he's indulging in suckiness. indulge by himself, with his friends or family, but she doesn't have to know. sometimes displays of suckiness to the object of affection might solicit pitiful attention, and i don't think Gxxxxr would want or need that. just my two cents.

Pop Shock Masquerade at Anime Expo!

I tried to give similar advice to someone once, and she just wasn't letting it soak in. If you hate your emotions and hate yourself it only makes it worse. You have to ride the emotions until they end, otherwise it will just last longer. But there's a fine line - you don't want to dwell on it, you just have to experience it, I think anyway.

Your response reads just as I see your short films and cartoons; very warm, and friendly, and witty, and a little sad, and very honest, and well-put together. And poignant.

Poignancy without shmaltz is a hard thing to achieve, man.

WoW Laura are your the girl in the hardware store?

Creepy?
Nah.... everyone find some compassion, comraderie and common ground is good for the spirit. You can find the different angles on things when things are healed and time has passed.
How about we go for that instead of deviciveness Laura?

complete agreement on the necessity of "Freaking the fuck out". Although I would prefer a wake myself.

That's actually pretty sound advice - not easy, of course but still.

And what's this with Italian funerals? Interesting - wikipedia way I go!

it would be much easier to get drunk a lot and fill the void with women you don't care about. it's a quicker way to wait out the funk you're livin' in.

Lev's advice is good, too. but it doesn't sound very fun.
