This is certainly not the first time that we have had flu/disease
scares. Remember SARs? Its a constant reminder that we live in a very
uncertain world. Its also a reminder that we need to be careful
everyday, not just when we travel to foreign counties about germs and
hygiene. How many times do we touch our face after opening a door,
shaking a strangers hand, and countless of other objects that we
encounter which may have germs. The good news is that we haven't had
an epidemic in the US for some 40 years when 34,000 people died from
the flu. Right now we have 50 cases with no death, but I unfortunately predict that we will probably see some deaths in the US.
But this is also a reminder that everyone needs
what I call the "Loose Change Fund." There's not much in this "fund";
its less than $100. Its really your change in your piggy bank, or car,
kitchen drawer, blue jean pockets, etc. It's enough to allow you to
get some quick preventive supplies. In the case of the swine flu, this means buying masks (such as the N99 Mask) and hand sanitizer.
Also, make sure that you have a medical directive
(also known as a living will in some states) and a power of
attorney/health care proxy so that your loved ones can help with quick
medical decisions on your behalf if you are not able to do so. Also,
make sure that your loved ones know where you keep these documents
(i.e., with an attorney, accountant, etc) so they can actually be
easily found in cases of emergency.
Let's pray that we get through this swine flu epidemic quickly.
