Who Gives Kudos:

If you're wondering where I am, the answer is ... writing. I set myself a breakneck pace to get the Hal Spacejock 5 draft finished and that leaves little time for other forms of writing - such as email and blogging. (And people wonder why I embrace my twitter account like a drowning man...)

Anyway, my Hal 5 schedule looks something like this:

By July 3: Finish the rough draft. (Still have 4 chapters to write, one per day)
By July 15: Finish the first edit. Much cutting, pasting, chopping, wailing.
By July 31: Send the finished second edit+ off to my first readers for comment
By August 15: Complete the third edit and read through all the first reader feedback
By August 31: Complete the twentieth edit* and send the MS to my editor.

+ Last time they got the twentieth edit. This one's going to be an eye-opener ...

* That's going to be a busy 2 weeks.

holy space junk Simon, I'm feeling nauseous just looking at that schedule. I've been working on a revision for weeks. WEEKS!! I think if you pull this off you should be eligible for a special writers award...it would come in the form of  a gold plated pair of hands spasmed over a keyboard with a note from James Patterson - an envious one because he doesn't actually 'write' his books anymore. Aah James, how I loathe thee and your millions. Of course, if you happen to know James Patterson please forget everything I just said and give me his number.
Envy really is an unflattering shade of green.
best of luck

I can't wait to read it! 'Good to know you're writing--I confess I had wondered where you'd gotten to (or if you were spending all your time twittering. :) )

Yikes! I am in the process of writing my first novel. Being a novice novelist, (Cute, huh) I have often wondered if the writing itself is the least grueling aspect of the whole process. I very much enjoy writing, although I'm not sure if I will ever be able to stop editing. This very note took 4 drafts and I know it could be better. I'm not schizophrenic, I just have this friend. Would you like to meet him? Hi!
     It seems that the aspect of procuring an agent (or not) and the ensuing attempt to sell your work, especially the first time around, are the worst. I've never been very comfortable singing my own praises, so I suppose time will tell. In all honesty that is the only part that makes me squeamish. I have read everything I could stomach about the process of selling your work and what I fathomed from all of it was, "Good Luck, you're on your own."
     So I suppose I'll just finish and then let the fun begin.
