The people Jesus knows
Mark 2:15-17
Kelli Haigwood, member, Zion HIll Church of Cabot
Jesus was severely criticized for the company He kept and the friends He chose to associate with.
In Mark 2:15-17, it is written that Jesus had many followers, many of whom were sinners. In this passage, the Pharisees saw Jesus was having a meal with these “sinners and the publicans” as well as His disciples. They were disturbed Jesus would be associating with these people. How could He eat and drink with sinners?

When Jesus heard this, He said, “They that are whole have no need for a physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Mark 2:17). Jesus always seemed to be with those who wanted and needed Him. He knew those who were lost and He knew His purpose.

Like all children from time to time, when I was young I would sometimes try my parent’s patience. I guess you could say I would “push them to the limit.” My mother called it “crying out for discipline.” I find that to be so true now – funny, but true. I was searching for guidance, and my parents were there to provide it whether I liked it or not.

One of their many methods was to tell me: “Jesus is watching and He knows.” Well of course, that was effective. Now that I am older and hopefully a little wiser, I am so thankful that Jesus is watching and He does know. We are not just acquaintances, He is my best friend.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the world population is estimated to be over six billion and growing. I cannot begin to fathom six billion people. How could any of us wrap our minds around such a large number? Yet, what is so amazing and wonderful is that Jesus knows each and every one. He knows our likes, dislikes, thoughts and feelings. The list is endless.

As you are reading these comments, I would like for you to try something for me. Are you ready? Ok, here goes. Take a few deep breaths. Try to relax and clear your mind of all thoughts for the moment.

Now, say to yourself, “Jesus knows me.” Think about that for a moment. Let those words begin to sink into your soul. “Jesus knows me.” Now, ask yourself, “Do I know Jesus? Do I really know Jesus?”
