Last night I went to a gathering of sista's. The theme was save our sisters save ourselves it was wonderful. The Affinity group put together a space that was safe and inviting. I felt welcomed the moment I walked in. The first face I saw was Enina jay if you don't know of her she's an outspoken wordsmith. I met her at a take back the night event earlier this year. Her words were so powerful that I felt them as if I were in the moment going through the emotions she spoke about. The night started with a panel of women involved in ending violence in the Black community. I was most impressed by the 2 youth panelist. I am inspired by young people because they are our future. They impressed me with their honest and candid view. They spoke about the way that they have had to developed survival skills. This is not some war torn third world country, this is the southside of Chicago. This is the type of shit that makes me the mad black mother at teacher's meetings when techniques like LOCK DOWN are used in a middle school. When grown ass men stare at my daughter's chest in public in front of me I become that crazy black bitch. I want the shit, to stop I want better, so I'll stay that mad momma or crazy bitch until it stops. But enough about me last night had me on a natural high. Everyone was sharing ideas and networking, educating each other great great great stuff. The performances off the chain - dancers, poets. The best was this group of musicians and a mother, daughter, father trio. The panties on trial was my favorite. It's about how as a rape victim you and your panties are on trial. The daughter is a star and will be someone who will make people sit up and take notice. If I havn't made it clear yet I'm impressed by my sistas and their achievements.
