Current mood:  determined

Here is a subject I have been debating on addressing due to the content and those that might interprit it the wrong way, but having been a show director I definitely have an opinion I would like to share-

a Director by definition .. minmax_bound="true"> ..>
1. a person or thing that directs.
.. minmax_bound="true"> ..>
2. one of a group of persons chosen to control or govern the affairs of a company or corporation: a board of directors.
.. minmax_bound="true"> ..>
3. the person responsible for the interpretive aspects of a stage, film, or television production; the person who supervises the integration of all the elements, as acting, staging, and lighting, required to realize the writer's conception. Compare producer (def. 3).
.. minmax_bound="true"> ..>
4. the musical conductor of an orchestra, chorus, etc.
.. minmax_bound="true"> ..>
5.

the manager or chief executive of certain schools, institutes, government bureaus, etc.

with that being said, I think that when you are presenting a show with live entertainment it goes one step beyond just running the show....

I have seen one to many drag show directors that use their position for self supporting reasons, i.e." I will only book you in my show if you book me in yours"  that my dear is political b.s.!

As a show director I think it also important to present the best show possible.  The highest quality performers that are PROFESSIONAL, having variety, costumes, illusions, and true stage pressance.  Many cast aside this notion to give  favortism to local queens.  I personally feel that the ENTIRE show should be consistant and entertaining.  Some obviously feel as long as they have put something on the stage (good or bad) that they have succeeded in their position... NOT!   When I run a show, I want all of the audience to walk away with the knowledge that what they experienced was a great evening with great entertainment....I dont want them to walk away talking about the buggers on stage with the bad wigs, bad makeup, and wondering how the hell they ended up getting paid to perform, or why the hell anyone tipped them.  Of course there are several explanations as to why this happens:

1. the individual is a local person that spends all their time in the bar and thus has lots of aquaintances that will tip even if they are rotted on stage.

2. the show director only hires those of a lesser grade than themselves so they will look like a "star" in comparison.

3. upper management has booked or dictated whom shall perform at such establishments with no reguard to the entire cosistancy of the evening.

4. the entertainer(s) are new and are performing for free  (this is a rite of passage for most up and coming drag queens, but as a director I also feel that the audience shoule be aware -"ladies and gents, our next person is new and is working for your tips, etc")

Variety is also something I feel is lacking in many shows.  I hate seeing a performance where everyone cast is trying to do the same thing.  As I mentioned in a previous blog I was forced to remove, the trend in the Chicago area has shifted to the trannies.  Boobs, pasties, g-strings - "how naked can I get" to me is BORING as hell!  There are so many variations to choose, why have them all be the same??  Boy queens, black queens, big queens, camp queens, dancing queens, illusionists, drag kings, vocalists and more- yet is tits on parade at TOO many places.  This time I wont name names, but just check the cast lists at ANY club that has regular shows in the Chicago area and you will see what I mean.

In the end a great show should have variety, professional seasoned performers, and one that people recall as being FABulous, not fucked up!

Dont like my blog??? fuck off!

Love, Regina UPright

Uh-oh.....does this mean that The Office STILL won't book you? LOL

I agree! A show director needs to view the entire picture and a lot of times they don't. The show needs to be well rounded rather than boxed in, and unfortunately a lot of show directors box not only themselves in, but the show and the bar they perform in. Variety and quality are the keys to a successful show and unfortunately most shows do not contain either.

Theres nothing worse than a messy show director.......drunk, stupid, and trying to be a star. They need to remember they are directing the show and while they may not be the favorite IN the show, they are still the ones putting it together and doing all the work. And in the end thats more important!

OMG... THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH... I LOVE THIS BLOG... I've been performing in chicago for a few years.. and have seen the "worst" show directors doing the "favorite" thing.. which I think is very sad, considering there are a LOT of up & coming talent in chicago who see the "cliques" in the bars .. and I've spoken to a couple of "show directors who indeed said " well I'll book you only if you book me at your venue".. which i do agree is political bs..

love ya..
